Huskies vs. Wildcats Gameday
Northern Illinois heads to Tucson Saturday night still searching for its first win of the season. The Huskies are 0-2 after getting shut out 40-0 at Iowa and then falling 28-24 to Illinois State, while Arizona sits 1-1 following a 35-7 win over Northern Arizona and a 28-17 loss at BYU. TNT has the 10:30 PM ET kickoff from Casino Del Sol Stadium.
NIU at least showed some signs of life in its second game. The Huskies scored 24 unanswered points against Illinois State after falling behind 28-0, but digging a four-touchdown hole against an FCS opponent isn’t exactly recommended road preparation for Arizona.
NIU found some offense last week, although waiting until 28-0 was a little dramatic.
Arizona comes home after leading No. 15 BYU at halftime before getting blanked over the final two quarters. The Wildcats were still perfect in the red zone through two games, converting all six opportunities.
Saturday also brings something completely new for both programs.
This will be the first meeting between Northern Illinois and Arizona, so there isn’t any stale series history to dust off and pretend matters. Arizona has won seven of its last eight games at Casino Del Sol Stadium.

Northern Illinois Huskies vs. Arizona Wildcats Odds & Last 5
The sportsbooks aren’t exactly leaving much mystery about which team is expected to win. Arizona is laying 34.5 points at home, with the Wildcats priced anywhere from roughly -10000 to -35000 on the moneyline depending on the shop. Northern Illinois is returning a lottery-ticket number, while the total sits at 49.5.
That spread puts Arizona in the unusual position of being asked to cover nearly five touchdowns after scoring only 17 at BYU. Of course, Northern Illinois has already lost 40-0 at Iowa and 28-24 at home to Illinois State, so the sportsbooks didn’t arrive at 34.5 after throwing darts.
Arizona’s opener was much cleaner. The Wildcats handled Northern Arizona 35-7 before leading BYU 17-14 at halftime last Saturday, only to get shut out after the break.
NIU’s offensive trajectory went the other direction.
After producing nothing at Iowa, the Huskies finally generated 24 points and 339 yards against Illinois State. They still fell short, but at least Arizona now has something besides a 40-0 box score to prepare for.
Wildcats Stats
Arizona has scored 52 points through two games while showing considerably more balance than its Week 2 final score suggests. The Wildcats rolled up 35 against Northern Arizona before moving the ball effectively for stretches at BYU.
Noah Fifita has thrown for 509 yards through two games and accounted for both Arizona touchdowns in Provo, one through the air and another on the ground. He now owns 76 career touchdown passes and sits within striking distance of Arizona’s career passing-yardage record.
Arizona’s defense allowing 70.5 rushing yards per game makes life awfully cramped for opposing offenses.
Kedrick Reescano has 97 rushing yards through two games, while the Wildcats have several options in the passing game. They’ll need them Saturday because leading receiver Giovanni Richardson is out with a lower-body injury suffered against BYU.
The bigger mismatch may be on the other side of the ball.
Arizona has recorded seven sacks through two games and held its opponents to just 70.5 rushing yards per game.
The Wildcats completely erased Northern Arizona’s ground attack and then held BYU below 100 rushing yards.
NIU hasn’t shown enough offensive consistency yet to make that matchup look particularly friendly.
Huskies Stats
Northern Illinois has scored 24 points through two games, and all 24 came during its comeback attempt against Illinois State.
The Huskies were shut out at Iowa before finally finding some rhythm last Saturday.
Taron Dickens delivered his best stretch of the young season against the Redbirds. He completed 22 of 27 passes for 193 yards, one touchdown and one interception as NIU rallied from a 28-point deficit.
DeAree Rogers was his favorite target.
Rogers matched a career high with 11 catches for 74 yards and a touchdown, while Telly Johnson Jr. carried 22 times for 83 yards and another score. That was a much more functional offense than the one Arizona watched on film from Week 1.
The defense also created opportunities. NIU intercepted Illinois State twice, including a 30-yard pick-six by Andruw Ellis, and Avery Jones recorded two sacks.
Still, there is no hiding the larger problem. Northern Illinois has been outscored 68-24, and now it faces an Arizona team that should be plenty interested in taking out some second-half BYU frustration on somebody.

Huskies vs. Wildcats QB Matchup
Noah Fifita remains the centerpiece of Arizona’s offense in his final season in Tucson. He threw for 230 yards against BYU and added 38 rushing yards, accounting for both Wildcats touchdowns before the offense stalled after halftime.
He also enters Saturday chasing a little Arizona history.
Fifita is closing in on Nick Foles’ school career passing-yardage record and already owns the Wildcats’ career touchdown-pass mark. Northern Illinois would probably prefer the record chase wait another week, but its defense hasn’t exactly been handed a vote.
Dickens showed life against Illinois State; Arizona’s defense represents a considerably less forgiving follow-up exam.
Taron Dickens looked much more comfortable in NIU’s second game than he did during the shutout loss at Iowa. His accuracy helped the Huskies score 24 unanswered points and turn what looked like a complete disaster into a four-point loss.
The challenge now gets substantially harder. Arizona has seven sacks through two games, has been stingy against the run and can force Dickens into obvious passing situations if the Wildcats jump ahead early.
That puts plenty on the NIU quarterback’s shoulders.
Northern Illinois Huskies vs. Arizona Wildcats bottom line: Arizona could do most of the scoreboard damage itself, but NIU finally showed enough offensive pulse last week to make 49.5 more interesting than that enormous spread suggests.

Here is my Huskies Wildcats free pick: Over 49.5 is my play Saturday night in Tucson. Arizona scored 35 in its home opener and moved the ball well enough to score 17 at BYU before getting shut out in the second half. Northern Illinois has already allowed 68 points through two games.
The Wildcats are laying more than five touchdowns, so the obvious concern is whether NIU contributes enough. Arizona may not need much help. Noah Fifita has thrown for 509 yards through two games, and the Wildcats should have favorable field position against a Huskies offense still trying to find itself.
Arizona may spend most of Saturday night chasing this total by itself.
NIU did show some offensive life against Illinois State after getting blanked at Iowa. Taron Dickens completed 22 of 27 passes last week, while DeAree Rogers caught 11 balls and Telly Johnson Jr. added 83 rushing yards. Ten or 14 Huskies points would make our job considerably easier.
Arizona also has every reason to keep the offense moving after getting blanked in the second half at BYU.
A comfortable lead shouldn’t automatically kill the scoring.
