It’s time for another chapter of the South Oldest Rivalry.
The North Carolina Tar Heels will head up into the mountains of Charlottesville and take on the Virginia Cavaliers from Scott Stadium this Saturday on the ACC Network. UNC comes into this one as the seven-point road favorites, with the total opening at 58.
HISTORY: UNC and UVA have competed in the second-longest running rivalry in college football history. These two schools have met in every season since 1892, crossing paths a whopping 126 times. North Carolina leads the all-time series 64-58-4, but Virginia has won four of the last five meetings.
North Carolina Tar Heels
North Carolina got off to a good 3-0 start despite scares from a pair of Sun Belt schools. The Tar Heels took down Florida A&M in their home opener, and then nearly had any playoff aspirations ended with a trip to Boone. UNC avoided disaster after allowing 40 fourth quarter points, and took down App State in a shootout, 63-61.
Mack Brown’s bunch dodged another bullet seven days later, coming back to defeat Georgia State after trailing at halftime. The Tar Heels lost their first game of the season when Notre Dame came to town, but they’ve bounced back with a pair of victories to open ACC play. UNC beat Virginia Tech at home by 31 points, then took a trip to South Beach and picked up an upset victory over Miami in Week 7. UNC then traveled down Tobacco Road and beat Duke by three in a shootout, and came out of their bye with a successful homecoming day.
In Week 9, North Carolina (+3.5) beat Pittsburgh, 42-24, improving to 3-5 against the spread this season.
North Carolina is scoring 41.8 points per game, while allowing 31.4 ppg.
Drake Maye has provided a seamless transition at the quarterback spot for UNC. The redshirt freshman jumped out to a terrific start, and he’s improved with every performance. Maye had his best outing of the year versus Pitt last weekend, passing for a season-high 388 yards and five touchdowns. Maye has led the ACC in passing percentage, yards, and touchdowns throughout the course of the season.
Maye has thrown for 2,671 passing yards, with 29 touchdowns to three interceptions, while adding a team-leading 439 rushing yards and three scores on the ground through the first eight games of the season.
Running the ball is an afterthought for UNC, but with veteran back Caleb Hood now out for the year, Omarion Hampton, will now regain the lead role. The redshirt freshman paces the backfield with 358 yards and six touchdowns, but he’s been quiet since the start of ACC play.
Maye has spread the ball out well, and Josh Downs and Antoine Green have become his favorite targets. Downs has been really big since the start of ACC play, and he caught a season-high 11 passes for 102 yards and two scores in win over Pitt. Green got even crazier on the Panthers, posting career-highs of ten catches for 180 yards and two scores himself. Downs leads UNC with 48 receptions for 527 yards, while Green leads the Heels with 564 receiving yards on 23 catches.
Virginia Cavaliers
Inconsistency has defined Virginia’s season. They defeated in-state foes Richmond and Old Dominion, but they’ve faltered four times against Power 5 schools. They were overmatched in a battle of states with Illinois back in Week 2, and they dropped their first three ACC games to Syracuse, Duke, and Louisville. The Wahoos caught a break on a short week last time out and defeated Georgia Tech, but they came up just short last weekend at home..
In Week 9, Virginia lost to Miami, 14-12, but managed to cover the three-point spread and improve to 3-5 ATS this season.
Virginia scores 16.9 points per game, while allowing 21.5 ppg.
Brennan Armstrong was able to breathe against Georgia Tech, but Miami proved to be to too much for the Cavs in the trenches. Armstrong was sacked five times, and the offensive line continues to hinder and hold this team back. UNC’s front line will be licking their chops.
Armstong is up to 1,826 passing yards with six touchdowns to nine interceptions, and 353 rushing yards and four more scores on the season.
Perris Jones has received the majority of the work early, but it’s been slim pickings. The senior back from Alexandria gained 118 yards in the win over Richmond, and he’s been contained since the start of ACC play, aside from a 87-yard performance versus Syracuse. Jones leads UVA with 365 rushing yards.
UVA’s pass catchers have been limited outside of the Air Raid this season. Swiss-army knife Keytaon Thompson led the team in catches last season, and he’s on pace to do so again with team-leads of 53 receptions and 579 receiving yards. Dontayvion Wicks recorded a 1200-yard season in 2022, but he’s only got 30 catches for 430 yards thus far.

Free Week 10 NCAA Football Final Analysis:
The South’s Oldest Rivalry has been a shootout for the past three seasons, but this one could end up being one-sided.
It’s going to be really hard for UVA to keep up here. UNC comes into this one as hot as any team in the ACC right now, and they should show no signs of stopping, with a trip to Charlotte in their sights and within reach.
Virginia’s offense has declined immensely this season, and after failing to score more than 20 points in every game since the season-opening with over in-state foe Richmond, things have been very slow on that side of the ball. It could get dark in the mountains this weekend & North Carolina should lay the points here. UNC by 10
Take North Carolina’s road spread confidently, as they should tackle their oldest rivals handily here.
