The Hawaii Rainbow Warriors host the upset minded New Mexico State Aggies Saturday on the tail end of a 2021 home-and-home.
Hawaii gained week 5 offensive explosion during its 41-21 rout of New Mexico State. The Rainbow Warriors offered 492 balanced yards that outing while erratic Chevan Cordeiro came through when needed.
Hawaii has waxed and waned to Cordeiro fortunes. At 3-4 overall, the Rainbow Warriors stand 2-1 at home this year and 3-4 ATS.
Meanwhile, New Mexico State continues its seemingly perrenial rebuild at just 1-6 SU. The Aggies are 0-4 away, but do offer a 5-2 mark ATS.
Although, Hawaii seems legit on their home field at -18 vs. this NMSU group they recently handled by 20 points.
New Mexico State Aggies
Not renown for cfb prowess, New Mexico State has endured another losing campaign under head coach Doug Martin. Despite being a continual L, Martin likely keeps his job after bringing NMSU a 2017 Alamo Bowl win -the program’s lone postseason bid since 1960.
More recently, however, the Aggies stand 7-26 in their last 33 outings. The one 2021 New Mexico State win comes against South Carolina State, 48-35.
That’s far from encouraging, especially when tallying up losses vs. UTEP, San Diego State, New Mexico, San Jose State, Nevada, and Saturday’s host.
Aggies quarterback Jonah Johnson missed several targets while completing 28 of 47 with a TD & pick against Hawaii. Yet, two Johnson fumbles, on a day he absorbed four sacks, killed any NMSU momentum opposite their Mountain West rival.
With some of their lowlights noted, a statistical look shows the Aggies score 23 ppg and allow 37. Both numbers are among lower FBS figures.
NMSU QB Johnson adds 8 aerial scores against 5 interceptions. RB Juwuan Price offers 270 total yards for an Aggies group averaging just 85 ground yards per.
Hawaii Rainbow Warriors
Even with defense-oriented Todd Graham leading matters, Hawaii still allows tons of points. In fact, opponents score 31 ppg against the Rainbow Warriors during a season dedicated to balance.
The problem now is Hawaii no longer has offensive tsunamus to cover their inability to get stops.
Chevan Cordeiro has become a massive dissapointment following his breakout 2020 campaign. The sophomore QB has a 7-6 touchdown/interception ratio and is completing just 54 percent of his passes.
Obviously, poor quarterback play factors into the Rainbow Warriors’ 3-4 record and larger defensive struggles. Each time Cordeiro goes three-and-out or tosses a pick, Hawaii defenders are overtaxed.
That excess field time is a major reason why the Rainbow Warriors allow 306 passing yards per game.
Yet, those issues seemingly vanished Sept. 25 when Hawaii hammered NMSU 41-21. That evening Cordeiro added 277 passing yards to bolster his side’s 215 yd rushing attack.
It stands to reason Hawaii will produce more of the same quality from home this weekend.
