New Mexico will travel to College Station and attempt to knock off the #7 Aggies in front of the 12th man. Texas A&M avoided a major upset last week in Boulder as Colorado pushed the team to the brink and lost 10-7.
New Mexico Lobos
New Mexico escaped with a 34-25 win at home against New Mexico State last weekend to remain undefeated on the season. Terry Wilson completed 26 of 37 passes for a career-high 362 yards with 3 TD’s and no interceptions to lead the Lobos to victory.
Wilson, a former Kentucky-transfer, has plenty of big-game experience from his days in the SEC with the Wildcats. For his career, the 6-foot-3 senior has thrown for 26 touchdowns and only 12 interceptions while adding another 10 scores on the ground.
On defense, New Mexico comes into the week allowing 21 points and 266 yards of total offense per contest. The Lobos defense has been particularly stout against the run through two games, allowing just 51.5 yards per game on the ground. Their hands will be full with Isaiah Spiller.
Texas A&M Aggies
Anyone around College Station knows this may very well be one of the most talented Aggies’ rosters in quite some time.
Texas A&M comes in with 9 preseason All-SEC players as they have a lot of weapons on this team. Three of those are first teamers, including running back Isaiah Spiller.
Last week, the Aggies narrowly escaped a likely season ending loss as they survived the Colorado Buffaloes on the road 10-7. A&M scored the go-ahead touchdown with just under 3 minutes to play and held on to win.
The lack of offensive production was due to Redshirt Freshman Haynes King suffering a fractured leg in the 1st quarter. The injury is expected to sideline the starter until mid-October.
Zach Calzada, a sophomore, played the rest of the game in King’s place. He completed 18 of 39 passes for 183 yards, one touchdown and one interception. He also ran for 28 yards on seven carries.
While New Mexico is not a team you should look over, they have all the components to wear them down. Expect Spiller to be the difference maker here in this one for A&M.
NCAA Football Handicapping Trends

- Aggies are 23-10-1 ATS in their last 34 games in September.
Free Week 3 NCAA Football Pick
It will be interesting to see what the Aggies can muster on offense this week with Calzada under center for a full game. If Texas A&M is going to cover the spread, they will have to find a way to move the ball on the ground.
The Lobos have fared well against the run through two games and Spiller was bottled up, for the most part, against Colorado last week. While he caught six passes for 56 yards and a score, the Aggies’ dynamic running back had just 20 rushing yards and averaged just 2.5 yards per carry on the ground.
If New Mexico can hold its own upfront, Wilson has enough experience and talent to keep this game closer than most people expect.
Take the Lobos to cover the spread on the road.
