Lobos vs. Aggies Gameday
The New Mexico Lobos head south to Las Cruces Saturday for the 116th edition of the Rio Grande Rivalry against the New Mexico State Aggies. Kickoff is set for 3:30 PM ET at Aggie Memorial Stadium on CBS Sports Network.
New Mexico enters 2-1 after suffering its first loss of the season at Oklahoma. The Lobos opened with a 38-7 win over Central Michigan and hammered Mercyhurst 70-7 before falling 14-6 in Norman.
Now comes a considerably shorter road trip.
Nothing says neighborly rivalry quite like driving down I-25 for three hours and trying to ruin somebody’s Saturday.
New Mexico State is 1-2 after splitting its first two road games around a 51-14 home win over Mercyhurst. The Aggies lost 29-19 at Hawaii last time out and had last week off before getting their in-state rival at home.
New Mexico has won the last two meetings and leads the all-time series 75-35-5. The Aggies, however, have won two of the last four, so this rivalry hasn’t exactly been a one-way street lately.

The Lobos won 38-20 in Albuquerque last season and now head back to Las Cruces with another year of state bragging rights sitting on the table.

New Mexico State has been considerably more generous defensively.
The Aggies allowed 34 points in their opener before beating Mercyhurst 51-14 and losing 29-19 at Hawaii. NMSU has shown considerably more life offensively at home, where its only appearance produced 51 points and 490 total yards.

Aggies Stats
New Mexico State has scored 87 points through three games, with 70 coming in its last two. The Aggies have done most of their damage through the air, throwing for 846 yards compared with 407 on the ground.
Trey Hedden has been responsible for most of that passing production.
Hedden has completed 56 of 97 passes for 781 yards and five touchdowns, but he’s also thrown three interceptions. TK King leads the receivers with 239 yards and two scores, while AJ Williams III has added 135 yards and a touchdown.
James Jones gives the Aggies some balance.
The veteran running back has rushed for 243 yards and two touchdowns while averaging 5.7 yards per carry. TJ Washington Jr. has added 85 yards and two scores, giving NMSU another option when it doesn’t want Hedden throwing it all afternoon.
Hedden can push the ball downfield; the trick Saturday is making sure the Lobos don’t catch too many of them.
Turnovers were costly at Hawaii. The Aggies lost three fumbles and Hedden threw two interceptions, wiping away some otherwise productive offensive stretches in the 29-19 loss.
NMSU has forced a turnover in 19 consecutive games, so the Aggies are capable of returning the favor.
Lobos Stats
New Mexico has scored 114 points while allowing only 28 through three games. The Lobos followed two comfortable home wins by giving ranked Oklahoma everything it wanted in a 14-6 road loss.
The defense has been the constant.
New Mexico has produced nine sacks and seven interceptions, giving Jason Eck a disruptive group that hasn’t needed much help from the scoreboard. The Lobos held Oklahoma to 14 points and kept the Sooners scoreless for the final 26-plus minutes.
Scottre Humphrey leads the ground game with 181 rushing yards and three touchdowns. Kiefer Sibley has added 134 yards and another score, helping New Mexico build an offense that doesn’t have to live through the air.
The quarterback workload has been split.
Luke Moga has thrown for 235 yards and three touchdowns without an interception, while Toa Fa’avae has added 213 yards and another score. Both have also contributed with their legs, giving the Lobos flexibility depending on the situation.
New Mexico’s offense disappeared for stretches at Oklahoma, but the defense kept giving it chances.
That formula travels pretty well.
Lobos vs. Aggies QB Matchup
Trey Hedden is unquestionably the centerpiece of the New Mexico State passing game. He’s attempted 97 passes through three games, throwing for 781 yards and five touchdowns.
The volume comes with some danger.
Hedden has thrown three interceptions, including two against Hawaii, and New Mexico’s secondary already has seven picks. If the Aggies fall behind and have to throw repeatedly, that’s exactly the matchup the Lobos will want.
New Mexico approaches quarterback differently.

That creates a pretty clear contrast Saturday.
Hedden is being asked to generate offense through the air, while New Mexico can spread the workload around and lean on its defense. The Aggies quarterback has the bigger passing numbers, but Moga and Fa’avae haven’t been asked to chase those numbers.
For NMSU, protecting the football is the whole deal.
For New Mexico, another clean afternoon from its quarterbacks may be enough.

Here is my Lobos Aggies free pick: I’m taking New Mexico -11.5. The Lobos have been much better defensively through three games, and that’s where I see the biggest separation in this rivalry matchup.
New Mexico State can move the football through the air with Trey Hedden, but turnovers have been an issue. That’s a dangerous habit against a Lobos defense that has been creating pressure and taking the football away.
Rivalry games can get weird, but five turnovers against Hawaii is a little too weird for my taste.
The Aggies should get a boost from returning to Las Cruces, where they beat Mercyhurst 51-14. Still, New Mexico has already gone into Norman and held Oklahoma to 14 points, so I’m comfortable asking that defense to travel a few more miles down I-25.
The Lobos have also won the last two meetings in this rivalry. I think they make it three and create enough separation to cover the number.
Take New Mexico -11.5.
