Midshipmen vs. Blazers Gameday
Friday night brings an American Conference matchup to Protective Stadium, where Navy visits UAB for a 7:00 PM ET kickoff on ESPN.
The Midshipmen are 1-1 after getting last weekend off. Navy opened with a 42-15 win over Towson before falling 38-30 at Florida Atlantic, where a disastrous start left the Mids chasing the game most of the night. They trailed 38-7 before making the final score considerably more respectable.
Navy had an extra week to regroup after spending most of its trip to FAU digging out.
UAB is 1-2 after a 21-14 loss at Louisiana. The Blazers opened with a 42-23 loss at Illinois, returned home to beat ULM 26-20 and then produced only 218 total yards in Lafayette.
Navy has owned the brief history between these programs.
The Midshipmen are 3-0 against UAB, winning 31-6 in 2023, 41-18 at Protective Stadium in 2024 and 38-24 last season. Friday gives the Blazers another shot at finally putting something in the win column against the Mids.

Navy is the clear road favorite, sitting around -277 on the moneyline with UAB approximately +227.
The Midshipmen are laying seven points, while the total is 51.5. That’s an interesting number for a Navy team averaging 36 points per game but also built around a rushing attack that can chew through both yards and clock.
Navy has played only twice, beating Towson comfortably before losing outright as a road favorite at Florida Atlantic. The Mids rushed for 246 yards in that loss but surrendered 386 passing yards.
UAB has followed a similar win-loss pattern without the open date. The Blazers beat ULM in their only home game but lost both road contests, including Saturday’s seven-point loss at Louisiana.

UAB has scored 63 points through three games, averaging 21 per contest. The Blazers have thrown for 478 yards while leaning more heavily on a ground game that has produced 535 yards.
That rushing attack was at its best against ULM, when UAB piled up 266 yards on 52 attempts. It disappeared Saturday at Louisiana, however, with the Blazers held to only 74 yards on the ground and 218 total yards.
UAB can run the football, but 218 total yards at Louisiana wasn’t exactly an offensive sales pitch.
Ryder Burton has completed 41 of 72 passes for 478 yards, two touchdowns and three interceptions. Rod Robinson II has been one of the primary pieces in the running game, while EJ Reid has provided another option in the passing attack.
Defensively, UAB has surrendered 83 points through three games.
The Blazers did create two takeaways against Louisiana, including a fumble recovery for a touchdown. That helped keep them within seven despite an offense that converted only two of 12 third downs and possessed the ball for less than 25 minutes.
Midshipmen Stats
There isn’t much mystery surrounding Navy’s preferred method of transportation.
The Midshipmen have rushed for 752 yards through two games, averaging 376 per contest and 6.9 yards per carry. That puts Navy among the country’s best rushing teams, with Braxton Woodson leading the way at 296 yards and four touchdowns. Woodson’s ankle injury complicates the quarterback picture heading into Birmingham.
He was injured against Florida Atlantic, and Jackson Gutierrez responded by giving the offense a major spark in relief.
Navy’s passing numbers remain modest, which surprises absolutely nobody who has watched this program operate.
The defense has allowed 53 points, but the split is interesting. Navy has been outstanding against the run, surrendering only 40.5 rushing yards per game, while Florida Atlantic exposed the secondary for 386 passing yards.

Midshipmen vs. Blazers QB Matchup
Ryder Burton remains UAB’s primary quarterback after starting each of the Blazers’ first three games. He’s completed 41 of 72 passes for 478 yards, two touchdowns and three interceptions.
Burton threw for 219 yards in the opener at Illinois before UAB leaned heavily on its running game against ULM. He finished with 144 yards and an interception at Louisiana, where the Blazers struggled to sustain drives and finished 2-for-12 on third down.
The bigger question sits on Navy’s side.
Woodson’s ankle makes Navy’s quarterback situation the availability story worth watching before Friday’s kickoff.
Braxton Woodson has thrown for only 68 yards through two games, but that’s hardly the best way to measure his importance in this offense. He’s rushed for 296 yards and four touchdowns on 35 carries, averaging 8.5 yards every time Navy has put the ball in his hands.
Jackson Gutierrez took over after Woodson was injured at FAU and nearly turned a blowout into something interesting. Gutierrez completed six passes for 100 yards and two touchdowns while rushing for another 75 yards and a score.
If Woodson can’t go, Navy isn’t suddenly abandoning its identity. Gutierrez has already shown he can operate the offense, and the Mids will still lean heavily on a ground game averaging 376 yards per contest. UAB knows what’s coming; stopping it for four quarters is the considerably harder part.
Navy Midshipmen vs. UAB Blazers bottom line: Navy is going to run until UAB proves it can stop it, and the Blazers haven’t shown enough offense to make me expect Friday night to get completely loose.

Here is my Midshipmen Blazers free pick: I’m taking Under 51.5 Friday night at Protective Stadium. That’s a workable number.
Navy’s offense is built to squeeze a game, and that matters more to me than its two scores. The Midshipmen run on almost every down, averaging 376 rushing yards while keeping the clock moving. With Braxton Woodson’s ankle putting his availability in doubt, there is less reason to expect Navy to get cute.
UAB isn’t giving me many reasons to project a shootout either. The Blazers managed 218 yards at Louisiana, went 2-for-12 on third down and scored one offensive touchdown. Ryder Burton has two touchdown passes against three interceptions through three games.
The easiest path to this Under is Navy controlling possession without turning the game into a track meet.
UAB does have enough rushing ability to extend drives. Still, Navy is allowing only 40.5 rushing yards per game, so the Blazers may have to win through a passing game averaging 159.3 yards.
Navy can absolutely do most of the scoring here. A touchdown favorite doesn’t need UAB to contribute much, though, and that is exactly why 51.5 works for me. Give me long drives, a running clock and UAB settling into another low-output night.
