We will receive a rematch of college basketball’s NIT Final when the Mississippi State Bulldogs will travel north to take on the Memphis Tigers on Saturday. The Bulldogs defeated N.C. State last weekend, while the Tigers took down Arkansas State in a shootout.
HISTORY: These two programs have met 44 times, and they met in every season from 1975-2003. Mississippi State leads the all-time series 33-11.
Mississippi State Bulldogs
The Mississippi State Bulldogs were on the ropes in their season opener before Will Rogers found Jaden Walley found a go-ahead touchdown against Louisiana Tech. Last weekend was a bit easier, as they jumped out to a big halftime lead against N.C. State and didn’t look back.
Will Rogers has entered year two with a lot more poise after starting eight games in Mike Leach’s complex offense as a true freshman. Rogers went 39-47 for 370 passing yards and three scores in the Battle of the Bulldogs, and he went 33-49 for 294 yards and two scores against N.C. State.
The Air Raid requires running backs to be active in the passing game, and Jo’quavious Marks and Dillon Johnson have been just that. Marks had a quiet game against the Wolfpack, but he gained over 100 all-purpose yards, caught nine passes, and scored three times in the win over the Bulldogs.
Jaden Walley leads a deep group of pass catchers. He led the team in receiving last season, and he’s scored in both games this season. Waddle leads the Bulldogs with 108 receiving yards so far, while Cal transfer Makai Polk leads the team with 14 catches.
The Bulldogs buckled down on defense last week against N.C. State. They eliminated the run game, and forced the Wolfpack to 6-20 on third downs.
Memphis Tigers
The Memphis Tigers held off an inspiring rally from Arkansas State last weekend with a 55-50 win. The Tigers controlled most of the contest, but Red Wolves would storm back late and ruin the six-point spread along way.
True freshman Seth Henigan has played well in his first two career starts. He went 22-33 for 417 passing yards and five touchdowns last weekend against Arkansas State.
Fellow freshman Brandon Thomas has been really strong on ground so far as well. In the win over Nicholls, he gained 147 rushing yards on 16 carries, and he managed to top that last weekend. Thomas ran for 191 yards on 18 carries and two scores in the shootout win over the Red Wolves.
Calvin Austin III is also coming off of the game of his life. Austin III impressively went over the 1,000 mark last season, but last weekend he caught six passes for an astonishing 239 receiving yards. Senior tight end Sean Dykes had a big day himself, catching nine passes for a career-high 143 yards.
While Memphis had an amazing day offensively, they’ve seen much better days defensively. Along with giving up 50 points, they gave up 582 passing yards to Arkansas State.
Free Week 3 NCAA Football Pick
We could simply trust the pedigree of a SEC school over an AAC here, but Memphis checked a lot of boxes offensively last week. They will be at home, and their coming off of one of the bigger outburst in school history. They may not be able to keep up with Mike Leach’s aerial attack, but sure could contribute to the magic number.
4* Free Week 3 NCAA Betting Pick: Over 63.5
The offenses are too explosive not to target the total instead deciding a winner. Both teams have look extremely sharp on the offensive side of the ball, so we’re going bet on it being a shootout. Will Rogers looks much more commanding in the offense this season, and Memphis’ balanced game plan is going to produce points.
Bet the over on the game totoal, but if you’re going to target at winner, take Mississippi State.
