Week 1 was doubly devastating for the Golden Gophers. Not only did they fall 45-31 at home against Ohio State, but All Big-Ten running back Mo Ibrahim was also lost for the year with a leg injury. Saturday’s game will be just as much about finding depth as it will game planning for Miami-Ohio.
The RedHawks come into week 2 looking for some answers as well after falling 49-14 to Cincinnati in the opener, failing to cover the +22.5 spread. Miami Ohio does get a break with Ibrahim out, but Minnesota also has a very experienced QB in Tanner Morgan.
Miami Redhawks
Miami didn’t get a win in Week 1, but what they did gain was experience. Freshman Keyon Mozee carried the ball 15 times for 80 yards while fellow freshman Kenny Tracy tallied a 19-yard TD.
It’s hard to gauge whether Miami-Ohio can keep Saturday’s contest close for the simple fact that their week 1 opponent Cincinnati is just so good. The #8 Bearcats scored 0:45 seconds into the game and were up 35-0 at the half.
Miami-Ohio’s first TD of the season came with 3:20 left in the 4th quarter against Cincinnati’s 2nd and 3rd stringer and their second score was a 32 yard INT return against a backup QB.
Cincinnati is a good team, but the RedHawks defense showed little to no resistance regardless. Miami allowed 542 yards in week 1 and were just as horrible through the air (295) as on the ground (247).
Minnesota Golden Gophers
The Minnesota offense definitely has a different look after the setback of losing Ibrahim. The redshirt Senior is already a Minnesota legend, and seemed poised to add to that in 2021 running for 163 yards and 2 TD against Ohio State before the injury.
Now PJ Fleck has to try and replace a guy who ran for over 1,000+ yards and had 15 TDs in just 7 games last season. Treyson Potts had 10 carries for 34 yards after Ibrahim went down last week, and Bryce Williams did have a short TD run but there’s definitely work to do.
The good news for Minnesota is that there’s still a chance to salvage the season. Tanner Morgan is a senior who has played in 29 career games including completing 66% of his passes and throwing 30 TD in 2019. The Golden Gophers also return all five starters on the offensive line from last year and have three quality additions – and are one of the largest collective groups in the FBS.

That being said it was solid experience against Ohio State and played much better than Miami-Ohio did against their top 10 opponent in week 1. The Golden Gophers were up 21-17 on the Buckeyes in the 3rd quarter and were within one score with just over 5 minutes left in the 4th.
