The Middle Tennessee Blue Raiders will kick off the first college football Saturday with a game against Army on the road at Michie Stadium in West Point, New York.
Both these teams finished under .500 in 2019 as MTSU (Middle Tennessee) went 4-8 and Army was 5-7 on the year. Army will have a bunch of new faces on offense due to graduation and the same for MTSU’s defense as several key members left as well.
Middle Tennessee Blue Raiders
It’s a surprise to almost everyone that Middle Tennessee will have to take on Army in game one of their season as they were supposed to take on Duke or Troy in game one, but with schedule conflictions here we are getting MTSU and Army week one.
This will be coach Rick Stockstill’s 14th season as head coach of MTSU and he will return starting dual-threat QB Asher O’Hara to lead his offense. After only one year under center in college O’Hara threw for 2,616 yards, 20 touchdowns, and only eight interceptions while topping the 100-yard mark on the ground five times. He also added over 1000 rushing yards to his totals to go with nine touchdowns.
On the defensive side of the ball, the Blue Raiders surrendered 29.9 points per game in 2019, including 194 yards per game on the ground. In 2020, Middle Tennessee will have to find a way to make up for some losses and maybe even poised to worse on defense as they lost seven of their eleven starters.
Army Black Knights
Army had some regression in 2019 going 5-7 after winning 21 games between 2017-2018.
Head coach Jeff Monken looks like he is in a good spot for 2020 though as he has 13 starters from his team returning to play for him. Last season, the Black Knights featured the third-best rushing offense in the country, gathering 3,863 yards and 45 touchdowns on the ground. However, 2019 was the first time in four years that the triple-option strategy failed to produce 4,000 yards on the ground.

The biggest issue that the Knights face is the fact that leading rusher and starting QB Kevlin Hopkins graduated and is no longer on the team. Another issue that Army faces is running backs Kell Walker and Connor Slompka are gone as well, so it’ll be hard for the offense to have any flow without three of their key players from 2019.

I think Middle Tennessee is set up for the upset in this one or at least losing on a last-minute TD. The only thing holding MTSU back is their defense and the fact they surrender a lot of points. The good thing for them though is that their rushing defense is way better than their passing defense and Army has one of the worst air raid attacks in all of college football. Give me Middle Tennesee in the upset or close game to cover the spread.
