Wolverines vs. Golden Gophers Gameday
The Michigan Wolverines visit the Minnesota Golden Gophers on Saturday for a Week 5 Big Ten matchup at Huntington Bank Stadium in Minneapolis. Kickoff is scheduled for 12:00 PM ET on FOX, with both teams bringing 3-1 records into the afternoon.
Michigan is No. 24 in the Coaches Poll and enters at 0-1 in conference play after a painful 20-19 loss to Iowa. The Wolverines outgained the Hawkeyes 429-285, but Iowa scored the winning TD in the final seconds.
Minnesota is headed the other direction after winning two straight. The Golden Gophers opened Big Ten play with a 27-24 road win over Washington, with Drake Lindsey throwing three TD passes while the defense piled up seven sacks and two interceptions.
The Little Brown Jug is up for grabs for the 100th time, so there is a little history attached to this one.
Michigan has controlled this rivalry for a long time and has won the last five meetings. The Wolverines escaped with a 27-24 victory in Ann Arbor in 2024 after beating Minnesota 52-10 the previous season.

It’s Week 5, Michigan Wolverines vs. Minnesota Golden Gophers, and the Big Ten gets an old-school rivalry game with both teams trying to establish some early conference footing.
Michigan Wolverines vs. Minnesota Golden Gophers Odds & Last 5
The opening odds favor Michigan at -218 on the moneyline, while Minnesota comes back at +180. The Wolverines are laying 5.5 points on the road, with the total set at 43.5.
Michigan’s 20-19 loss to Iowa snapped a three-game winning streak. The Wolverines opened with a dramatic 13-12 win over Western Michigan, beat Oklahoma 17-10 and then broke loose offensively in a 52-17 victory over UTEP.
That Iowa loss was frustrating, but Michigan moved the football. The Wolverines produced 429 total yards and 21 first downs, with Bryce Underwood throwing for a career-high 276 yards and two TD’s.
Minnesota bounced back nicely after its lone loss of the season. The Gophers hammered Akron 41-7 and then went into Seattle and knocked off Washington 27-24, improving to 1-0 in Big Ten play.
The contrast is pretty clear. Michigan has been winning primarily with defense and controlled football, while Minnesota has received more consistent production through the air from Lindsey.

Golden Gophers Stats
Minnesota has scored 140 points through four games, with Lindsey leading an offense that has been considerably more dangerous through the air. The junior QB has completed 88 of 132 passes for 951 yards, seven TD’s and two interceptions.
TJ Thomas leads Minnesota on the ground with 251 rushing yards. Darius Taylor has added 107 yards and three TD’s, giving the Gophers some alternatives when opponents devote extra attention to Lindsey and the passing game.
Javon Tracy has been Lindsey’s favorite target with 24 catches for 281 yards and a TD. Noah Jennings has added 19 receptions for 275 yards and another score.
The defense has allowed 76 points through four games, but the pass rush is where Minnesota can become a problem. The Gophers recorded seven sacks against Washington alone, and that pressure helped them survive a late Huskies comeback.
Wolverines Stats
Michigan has scored 101 points through four games, although the raw total is heavily influenced by the 52-point eruption against UTEP. The Wolverines scored 13 against Western Michigan, 17 against Oklahoma and 19 against Iowa.
The defense has been the more reliable side of the equation. Michigan has surrendered only 59 points and held each of its first two opponents to 12 points or fewer before UTEP scored 17 and Iowa scored 20.
Underwood remains the centerpiece of the offense. He’s thrown for 780 yards with five TD’s and two interceptions through four games, and he’s also dangerous enough with his legs that Minnesota can’t treat him as a stationary passer.
JJ Buchanan has emerged as Michigan’s biggest receiving threat with 396 yards and four TD’s. He caught two scores against Iowa, including a 49-yarder that temporarily put Michigan ahead late in the fourth quarter.
The Wolverines also showed against Iowa that they can sustain possessions, producing multiple drives of seven plays or longer. That’s worth watching against a Minnesota defense that would rather create pressure than spend all afternoon defending long possessions.
Wolverines vs. Golden Gophers QB Matchup
Lindsey has been steady through four starts, completing two-thirds of his passes for 951 yards, seven TD’s and two interceptions. He was particularly sharp in Seattle, completing 21 of 29 passes for 204 yards and three TD’s in Minnesota’s 27-24 win.
Brady Palmer has seen limited action behind him, completing four of six passes for 34 yards. This offense belongs to Lindsey, and Minnesota has increasingly trusted him to make plays when the running game isn’t providing much room.
Underwood has thrown for 780 yards with five TD’s and two interceptions. His best passing performance came against Iowa, when he completed 17 of 28 attempts for 276 yards and two scores.

Underwood also gives Michigan a legitimate running threat from the QB position. That can help slow Minnesota’s pressure, particularly if the Wolverines can stay out of obvious third-and-long situations.
Tommy Carr has provided depth behind Underwood and threw a TD against UTEP, but Michigan’s fortunes Saturday are clearly tied to its sophomore starter.
This matchup may come down to which QB handles pressure better. Minnesota just generated seven sacks against Washington, while Michigan has been one of the better defensive teams in the country at creating negative plays.
Neither side has much incentive to get reckless if the game stays close.
Michigan Wolverines vs. Minnesota Golden Gophers bottom line: Michigan brings the stronger defensive profile into Minneapolis, but Lindsey and the Gophers have enough through the air to make the 100th battle for the Little Brown Jug a much tougher road assignment than the Wolverines would like.
Michigan Wolverines vs. Minnesota Golden Gophers Football Betting Trends

- Also, the Wolverines have covered the spread in 5 of their last 6 games after a loss.
- The Golden Gophers are 9-1 straight up in their last 10 home games.
- Additionally, Minnesota is 3-0 against the spread in their last 3 games as underdogs.
- The Gophers have hit the over in 7 of their last 9 games after a win.
Wolverines Golden Gophers Free Pick: Under 43.5
Here is my Wolverines Golden Gophers free pick: I’m backing Under 43.5.
Michigan has shown it can win without turning games into track meets, and that matters with this number. The Wolverines have allowed just 59 points through four games, while their offense has been much more comfortable grinding out drives than consistently producing quick scores.
Minnesota brings a dangerous passing game with Drake Lindsey, but Michigan’s front can make those possessions difficult. The Wolverines have been generating pressure, and Minnesota doesn’t need to play fast with a defense that has also been getting after opposing QB’s.
With two capable defenses and a total of 43.5, every empty possession carries a little extra weight.
The Golden Gophers have also shown they can win a tight game after getting past Washington 27-24. If Minnesota can keep Michigan from creating explosive plays, this has every chance to become the kind of Big Ten game where field position and long drives chew up the afternoon.
The Little Brown Jug may have plenty of history behind it, but I don’t need this edition becoming a history lesson in offensive football. Give me Under 43.5.
