The Michigan State Spartans will travel to Seattle and take on the Washington Huskies in primetime on ABC. The Huskies open as the three-point favorites at home, with the total opening at 56.5.
HISTORY: Washington and Michigan State have only crossed paths three times, with the last meeting taking place in the 1997 Aloha Bowl, where the Huskies blew out a Nick Saban-led Spartans team, 51-23.
Michigan State Spartans
Michigan State has jumped out to a 2-0 start, and a strong road win here would propel them into the top 10 of the polls. MSU defeated and covered against in-state foe Western Michigan in the opener, and they dealt even more punishment to the MAC last Saturday.
Last weekend, Michigan State shut out Akron, 52-0, covering the massive 35-point margin.
Payton Thorne returned under center after a strong 2021 season, and picked up right here left off. The junior quarterback threw four touchdowns in the win over Western Michigan, but he struggled a bit with turnovers against the Zips, tossing two picks. He’ll have to be sharper in Seattle Saturday night.
The run game has been the Spartans bread and butter early. Wisconsin transfer Jalen Berger has joined the team with a vengeance, dashing for 100 yards in each of the first two games. Berger scored three times against Akron, and he’s up to 227 rushing yards on the season. Jarek Broussard, a Colorado transfer, has complimented Berger well early, and he’s tallied 135 yards and two touchdowns thus far.
Thorne got his leading receiver Jayden Reed back, and they look set to build on a solid 2021 season. Reed caught six balls in the win over Akron, while fellow senior wideout Tre Mosley has scored in both games.
Washington Huskies
Washington will look to defeat their third state college after opening the season in strong form. The Huskies closed the Week 1 slate with a late night victory and cover over Kent State behind a big debut from Michael Penix Jr. UDub then followed it up with a tune up against a border foe.
Last weekend, Washington smashed Portland State, 52-6, covering a second massive spread in as many weeks.
Michael Penix Jr. has been a star and now that he’s out of Bloomington, it’s time to remember the name. The Indiana transfer has struggled with health over the past three seasons, but he may have finally put it together here with the Huskies. Penix Jr. has surpassed 335 passing yards in each game, and he tossed four scores in the opener.
The left-handed signal caller has defeated Michigan State twice in his career, even recording a Big Ten record 20 straight completions against them last season. Penix Jr. has thrown for 682 passing yards with six touchdowns to one interceptions.
Wayne Taulapapa came over from UVA’s Air Raid in the transfer portal, and has capitlized on the lead role early. Taulapapa leads the team in touches and rushing yards (151) though two games, scoring in both of them as well. Cameron Davis scored ran for 70 yards and scored twice in win over Portland State.
Jalen McMillan had a breakout freshman season and he’s come out of gate pretty strong here in 2022. After scoring twice in the win over Kent State, McMillan caught four passes for a game-high 127 yards, including a 84-yard touchdown run last weekend. Giles Jackson added six catches and 105 yards in the win as well.

Free Week 3 NCAA Football Final Analysis:
ABC’s got another good one in primetime, and it feels like one of those spots to trust a star player under the lights. That player will be Michael Penix Jr., who can send a message to the country with a big performance here. His story, his track record versus Michigan State, and his play so far provide all of the motivation here. This will by no means be an easy one for either side, but I like swaying with the star quarterback at home.
Take Washington’s spread in Seattle for this high-profile non-conference battle.
