The Miami Hurricanes will host the Michigan State Spartans this weekend for an early non-conference test. Both schools are coming off of home victories, but the Canes nearly suffered a scare last weekend.
HISTORY: These two schools haven’t crossed paths since 1987, but Miami has won all four matchups.
Michigan State Spartans
The Michigan State Spartans have started on a strong this season. The road win in the opener as underdogs was pleasant for both fans and bettors. They defeated Youngstown State handily, but missed the spread by a narrow point. They’ve looked solid on both sides of the ball, and they could give the Hurricanes a run for their money at home.
Payton Thorne looks like the next quality Spartans starting quarterback. We’ve seen Cousins, Cook, Stanton, and Hoyer, and MSU may just have another one in line. He managed the game in Northwestern nicely, and he went off last week against Youngstown State, going 15-21 for 280 passing yards and five total touchdowns (four pass, one rush).
Kenneth Walker III heads the Spartan backfield. The Wake Forest transfer made a crazy first impressive in the season opener against Northwestern, running for 264 yards on 23 carries and four scores. Sophomore back Jordon Simmons ran for a career-high 121 yards in the win over Youngstown State last weekend.
Jayden Reed has been dynamic and he leads the team in receving with nine catches for 245 yards and two touchdowns. Trey Mosley and Jalen Nailor join him on the outside, with the latter scoring a touchdown last weekend.
The Spartans jumped out to 28-7 lead after stifling Northwestern through the first three quarter in the opener. They buckled down last week and held the Penguins to less than 300 yards and forced two turnovers.
Miami Hurricanes
The Miami Hurricanes dodged disaster last weekend, after struggling in their season opening bout with Alabama. Appalachian State took a one-point lead with six minutes left the in the fourth, before D’Eriq King would lead them into field goal range, and Andres Borregales would nail the go-ahead score.
King has been one of the better quarterbacks in the nation since his groundbreaking season in 2018 at Houston. He transferred into Miami last totaled 3,093 yards (2,573 passing, 520 rushing) and he threw for 22 touchdowns, while running for four more. King is a very dynamic dual-threat quarterback, and he could give the Spartans fits Saturday.
Cam’Ron Harris ran for over 500 yards in each of the past two seasons, and he had a good game against Appalachian State, turning 16 carries into 91 yards, and scoring his first touchdown of the season.
Junior wideout Charleston Rambo leads the team with 12 receptions through two games. Key’Shawn Smith and Mike Harley have eight catches apiece, and the latter score in last weekend’s win.
Miami was overmatched in the opener against Alabama, but they buckled down last weekend against App State, holding them to less than 200 passing yards and making them go 5/15 on third down.
Free Week 3 NCAA Football Pick
The tough early season tests will continue this weekend for Miami. This will likely be their third straight highly contested game, while some teams are yet to play one. There are pros and cons to that, but did the Canes put too much on their plate?
4* Free Week 3 NCAA Betting Pick: Michigan State +6.5
Michigan State will look appealing here as a mid-day underdog. Miami entered last weekend on the heels of a physical contest with Bama, and they looked vulnerable at home against a solid App State team. Michigan State giving them a game at Hard Rock doesn’t sound out of reach.
Take Michigan State’s game spread as they should keep this one close, and the Canes may come into this game a bit worn down after two physical weeks of football.
