The Miami Hurricanes will travel up to Charlottesville and take on the Virginia Cavaliers from Scott Stadium this Saturday on the ACC Network. Miami comes into this one as the two-point favorites on the road, with the total opening at 48.
HISTORY: Louisville and Virginia have faced off in each season since the former joined the ACC back in 2014. The all-time series between the Cavs and Cards is tied 5-5, with UVA winning the last two matchups.
Miami Hurricanes
The Mario Cristobal era has started a bit rough. After getting off to a 2-0 start, Miami lost to Texas A&M in College Station, before suffering an embarrassing loss to Middle Tennessee State at home. A third straight loss would follow after their bye to UNC at home, and despite picking up a win in Blacksburg over Virginia Tech, last weekend felt like more regression.
In Week 7. Miami lost to Duke at home, 45-21, dropping to 2-5 against the spread this season.
Miami has score 29.3 points per game, while allowing 24.1 ppg.
An injury to Tyler Van Dyke has cast even more of a cloud on the Canes season. It looked like Van Dyke was started to get things going as well, combining for 800 yards in his last two starts. True freshman Jake Garcia was thrown into the fire, and delivered uninspiring results, tossing three picks while taking four sacks. He’ll face a bit of a test in the mountains against a Cavs team that just capitalized on a backup QB.
Henry Parrish Jr. has come in and got the bulk of the carries early for the Canes. The Ole Miss transfer scored three times in his debut against Bethune, and he followed it up by gaining over 100 total yards in the win over Southern Miss. Parrish Jr. is leading the team 441 rushing yards and four touchdowns.
Xavier Restrepo’s injury led to the wideout room needing to emerge on the fly. TIght end Will Mallory leads the team in receptions (25) and receiving yards (349) after a big game versus UNC. Colbie Young has burst onto the scene at the position, catching 18 passes for 280 yards and four scores over the past three games.
Virginia Cavaliers
Inconsistency has defined Virginia’s season. They defeated in-state foes Richmond and Old Dominion, but they’ve faltered four times against Power 5 schools. They were overmatched in a battle of states with Illinois back in Week 2, and they dropped their first three ACC games to Syracuse, Duke, and Louisville. The Wahoos caught a break on a short week last time out, and capitalized on the situation.
In Week 8, Virginia (+3) defeated Georgia Tech in Atlanta, 16-9, improving to 2-5 against the spread this season.
Virginia scores 17.6 points per game, while allowing 22.5 ppg.
Brennan Armstrong was able to breathe last weekend, and it gave Virginia winning results. Armstrong totaled a season-high 341 yards, and wasn’t sacked for the first time this season, which could be an encouraging sign going forward, as the UVA offensive line has been the achilles heel of the team this season. It remains to be seen how they old up versus Miami this weekend.
Armstong is up to 1,618 passing yards with six touchdowns to nine interceptions, and 286 rushing yards and four more scores on the season.
Perris Jones has received the majority of the work early, but it’s been slim pickings. The senior back from Alexandria gained 118 yards in the win over Richmond, and he’s been contained since the start of ACC play, aside from a 87-yard performance versus Syracuse. Jones leads UVA with 337 rushing yards.
UVA’s pass catchers have been limited outside of the Air Raid this season. Swiss-army knife Keytaon Thompson led the team in catches last season, and he’s on pace to do so again with a team-lead 48 receptions and 538 receiving yards. Dontayvion Wicks recorded a 1200-yard season in 2022, and he’s got 29 catches for 416 yards thus far.

Free Week 9 NCAA Football Final Analysis:
It’s been rough for Miami, as the program is in a transition period and the results on the field have been subpar. The Miami faithful have to be patient with Cristobal, and chalk this one up as a lost season. Losing Van Dyke while getting blown own at home by Duke was a double whammy, and will be tough to bounce back from.
Virginia has regressed quite a bit themselves here, going from ACC darling to doormat in less than 12 months. UVA’s biggest problem has been protecting their start quarterback, and those w same offensive lines may continue against a liable, but fast Canes defense.
There are glaring issues and questions surrounding both offenses. How will Miami travel with a first-time starter? Will the UVA offensive line be able to repeat last week’s effort? Will either of these teams be able to move the ball? This ACC matchup has Big Ten elements to it, and it’s unlikely these two schools muster enough offense to hit the magic number here.
Take the under for this ACC clash, and as a Virginian, with the Wahoos holding a clear, distinct advantage at the QB position, I advise giving their home underdog ML a swing this Saturday as well.
