The Miami Hurricanes will travel to College Station and take on the Texas A&M Aggies from Kyle Field in primetime this Saturday on ESPN. Texas A&M will open as the five-point favorites to win at home, with the total opening at 48.5
Texas A&M and Miami have met three times, with the most recent meetings coming from a home-and-home back in 2007-08. The Hurricanes won both of those matchups behind strong performances from former all-ACC back Graig Cooper.
Miami Hurricanes
Miami followed up their 56-point blowout of Bethune-Cookman up with a surprisingly hard-fought win over Southern Miss. The Golden Eagles nearly took an unexpected lead into halftime, but it was a different story in second half. The Hurricanes came out of the locker room firing, and cruised to their second victory of the season.
Miami defeated Southern Miss, 30-7, but a slow start prevented them from covering the massive 27-point spread.
Tyler Van Dyke enjoyed a successful 2021 season, and he’s off to another solid start this year. After completing 81% of his passes and tossing a par of touchdowns in the opener, Southern Miss made things a bit tougher for the sophomore QB.
Van Dyke has thrown for 446 passing yards with three touchdowns and one interception through two games.
Henry Parrish Jr. has come in and got the bulk of the carries early for the Canes. The Ole Miss transfer scored three times in his debut against Bethune, and he followed it up by gaining over 100 total yards in the win over Southern Miss.
Parrish Jr. is leading the team 205 rushing yards and four touchdowns, and Thaddius Franklin Jr. has complimented him well, gaining 135 yards and scoring three times through the first two weeks.
Xavier Restrepo has taken a big step forward here in Year 3 and his emerging chemistry with Van Dyke will be tested here in College Station. Restrepo leads the team in catches (11) and yards (172), and he’s on pace to shred last year’s numbers. Key’Shawn Smith returned to the lineup against USM, and caught three balls for 49 yards, including a 35-yard score.
This will mark the first real test for a Miami defense that’s been stout for a few seasons now. It’s been the strength of their team, and look for them to show up on the road here.
Texas A&M Aggies
Texas A&M cruised to a 31-0 victory in their opener against Sam Houston State, but their efforts at Kyle Field last weekend may have stained their CFB Playoff hopes for good early. The Aggies welcomed an Appalachian State (+18.5) team that was coming off of a heartbreaking lost to North Carolina, and they gave them a shoulder to cry on in possibly the worst way.
Texas A&M was upset at home by Appalachian State, 17-14, missing the 18-point margin by a mile.
The Aggies have not looked that sharp offensively through two games, and they’ll need to pick things up with a hungry Miami team coming to town. Jimbo Fisher will have to determine if Haynes King will be the guy behind center going forward, and with LSU transfer Max Johnson waiting in the wings, he may have to make that decision quickly.
King has thrown for 461 passing yards with three touchdowns to two interceptions, and added 58 yards on the ground through the first two weeks. Johnson lit is up at LSU, tossing 35 touchdowns to seven interceptions over his two years starting.
Devon Achane and King have split all of the backfield work over the first two games. Achane isn’t the bruiser A&M faithful are accustomed too, and he’s only been able to turn 28 carries into 108 rushing yards thus far. Although there’s been struggles, Achane was responsible for the only two touchdowns last week, a 26-yard run and a 95-yard kickoff return.
While the Aggies haven’t been able to get much going on the ground, they have a pair of reliable pass catchers in Ainias Smith and Evan Stewart. Smith has increased his totals in each of his first three seasons, and he got off to a monster start against Sam Houston, catching six passes for a career-high 164 yards and two scores. Stewart, a freshman wideout, has caught five passes in each of his first two games, and looks to be an effective chain mover going forward.
Despite their falter last weekend, the A&M defense remains as strong as advertised.

Free Week 3 NCAA Football Pick
This bout could serve as Mario Cristobal’s signature win, or retribution for Jimbo Fisher. One thing we can bet on is two of best defenses in the nation colliding and giving us a physical contest in primetime.
4* Free Week 3 NCAA Betting Pick: Under 48.5
With both of these teams still finding themselves offensively, look for a defensive-themed battle here. A lot of check downs, running the football, and points will come at a premium in this one. This one runs all the way back to his time at Florida State, so look for Jimbo to have his team’s mind right at home here. The offense can’t be trusted to cover right now, but there’s optimism that the defense can perform at a high rate at home.
Take the under for this high stakes non-conference battle as Texas A&M will look to avenge one of the most embarrassing losses in school history.
