Hurricanes vs. Tigers Gameday
No. 4 Miami heads to Death Valley for a Week 5 ACC showdown with Clemson at Memorial Stadium. Mario Cristobal’s Hurricanes are 4-0 and 2-0 in conference play, while Dabo Swinney’s Tigers enter at 3-1 and 2-0.
Kickoff is set for 7:30 PM ET on ABC.
They’re the only two ACC teams that have played multiple conference games without a loss. Miami has rolled through September unbeaten, while Clemson has answered its season-opening loss with three consecutive victories.
Miami brings the perfect record; Clemson brings Death Valley after dark. Nobody bothered making this subtle.
Saturday gives Clemson its first shot at an AP Top 5 opponent at home since 2022. Miami, meanwhile, gets another ACC road test before finally reaching its first bye of the season.

Tigers Stats
Clemson’s defense has spent the last three weeks repairing the damage from its opener.
After LSU hung 51 points and 644 yards on the Tigers, Clemson has allowed averages of only 12.3 points and 282 yards over the three games since. The secondary has been especially sharp.
Cal entered last week with one of the nation’s more productive passing attacks and finished with only 145 yards through the air.
Elliot Washington II intercepted two passes, while Clemson kept the Golden Bears’ offense out of the end zone.
The Tigers also appear to have found their offensive foundation.
Gideon Davidson rushed for a career-high 159 yards and 2 TD’s on 22 carries at Cal. His 75-yard TD in the fourth quarter supplied the knockout punch.
Davidson has reached 100 yards in consecutive games.
Clemson still needs more from the passing game, but having something dependable on the ground changes the equation considerably. Asking a freshman QB to complement a productive rushing attack is one thing. Asking him to rescue the entire offense is how Saturdays become extremely long.
Hurricanes Stats
Miami demolished Central Michigan with 572 yards of offense.
The Hurricanes have now exceeded 500 total yards three times in four games. They scored on six straight possessions against the Chippewas and turned a brief 3-0 deficit into a 35-3 halftime lead.
Darian Mensah completed 23 of 27 passes for 338 yards and 3 TD’s.
Malachi Toney remained his most dangerous target, catching six passes for 120 yards and a score. It was Toney’s third 100-yard receiving game of the season.
Mensah has thrown more TD’s than incompletions this season, which feels unnecessarily disrespectful to opposing secondaries.
Miami’s depth also got tested in the backfield.
With Mark Fletcher Jr. held out for precautionary reasons, Chris Wheatley-Humphrey rushed for 104 yards and a TD. The Hurricanes didn’t have to change much offensively, which is usually the point of having this many toys.
Hurricanes vs. Tigers QB Matchup
Tait Reynolds enters his third career start for Clemson.
The freshman has won his first two, completing 13 of 21 passes for 108 yards at Cal while adding 28 on the ground. Clemson has wisely avoided asking him to become the entire offense while he settles into the job.
Darian Mensah arrives with considerably fewer training wheels.
The Miami QB is completing 88.7 percent of his passes through four games and has thrown 14 TD’s against only 12 incompletions. Accuracy at that level is difficult enough to defend before adding Miami’s speed around him.

Reynolds has to be comfortable taking the boring answer.
Miami has enough talent to punish forced throws, so Clemson’s best possessions may be the ones where Davidson does most of the work and Reynolds simply keeps the chains moving.
Mensah faces a different kind of challenge.
Clemson has enough talent in the secondary to contest throws and force Miami through longer possessions than it needed last week. Patience becomes important if the Tigers prevent the early explosives that have made the Hurricanes so difficult to settle against.
Miami Hurricanes vs. Clemson Tigers bottom line: Miami owns the obvious advantage at QB, while Clemson’s best chance is controlling tempo and forcing the Hurricanes to earn their points one possession at a time.

Hurricanes Tigers Free Pick: Clemson +16.5
Here is my Hurricanes Tigers free pick: I’m taking Clemson +16.5. Miami has looked nasty through four games, but this number asks the Hurricanes to do more than win. They have to create three-score separation in Death Valley against a Clemson team that has found a much more sustainable identity since opening night.
For the Tigers, this starts with Davidson and the clock. Clemson can lean on the run, reduce the number of possessions and keep its freshman QB out of situations where he’s chasing Miami through the air. Every six-minute drive is one less opportunity for Mensah and Toney to turn this into a highlight reel.
Miami has been terrific, but apparently being terrific now comes with a 16.5-point cover charge in Death Valley.
Clemson also doesn’t need Reynolds to win the QB comparison. It needs him to avoid the turnover that hands Miami a short field and lets this thing get sideways before the crowd has finished its first round of overpriced concessions.
That’s my path here: shorten the game, avoid cheap points and make Miami repeatedly drive the field. The Hurricanes can absolutely leave Clemson with a win, but covering more than two TD’s requires another level of separation. Give me Clemson +16.5.
