The Marshall Thundering Herd will travel south and take on the North Texas Mean Green for a Conference USA battle this Friday night. Neither team finished the month of September strong, but the Thundering Herd were able to get in the win column last weekend.
Marshall Thundering Herd
Marshall snapped a three-game skid last weekend with a home win over Old Dominion. A last-minute touchdown bomb from Grant Wells to Willie Johnson pushed the game into overtime, and after scoring on their second play, the Thundering Herd prevented the Monarchs from scoring to pick up the victory.
Grant Wells has thrown a lot so far this year, but his aggressiveness has gotten Marshall in trouble at times this season. He leads Conference USA with 2003 passing yards but he has eight touchdowns to nine interceptions.

Rasheen Ali has been an important piece to the offense through the first month of the season. He’s been very consistent, gaining 70 or more yards for the fourth straight game in the win over ODU. Ali leads Marshall with 566 rushing yards, he’s caught 21 passes, and he’s leads Conference USA with 12 total touchdowns.
Corey Gammage leads a solid group of pass catchers. The redshirt sophomore has caught six passes or more five times this season, and he leads the team with 38 catches for 506 receiving yards. Wideouts Shadeed Ahmed and Willie Johnson both recorded their second touchdown catch of the season last weekend.
North Texas Mean Green
North Texas has endured a rough season after winning their season opener. The Mean Green have dropped their last four games, and they not rest in the cellar of Conference USA’s West Division. There’s room for improvement, but UNT has a few red flags.
They may be figuring out the quarterback position with Austin Aune. The redshirt sophomore looked a lot more comfortable in his second start against SEC school Missouri last weekend, and he produced solid results. Aune went 16-26 for 305 passing yards with four touchdowns to two interceptions in Columbia, and he added 59 yards on the ground.
Aune’s dual-threat ability will add to North Texas’ strong run game. The Mean Green rush for 203.4 ypg, ranking inside the top-50, and their led by bellcow DeAndre Torrey. The senior back has been the focal point of the offense, carrying the ball 24 or more times on four occasions already this season. Torrey’s up to 601 rushing yards and four scores on the season.
Roderic Burns leads UNT in both catches (30) and yards (363), while only one other pass catchers has caught more than ten passes so far. Senior tight end Jason Pirtle is second on the team with 15 catches, and he scored his seventh touchdown of his career last weekend.
Free Week 7 NCAA Football Pick
The Friday slate is a bit heavier than normal, but this matchup presents an opportunity to get the weekend started on a good note. Despite last weekend’s final result, North Texas’ offense showed a few signs of life with Aune behind center. Will they be able to keep up with a Marshall team that’s shown explosiveness offensively? We don’t see it.
4* Free Week 7 NCAA Betting Pick: Marshall -10.5
Marshall was tasked with covering an unfair lofty spread at home last weekend, and it feels much more manageable this Friday, albeit on the road. They have one of the best offenses in Conference USA, and we feel good trusting them against a North Texas team looking to get out of a funk. Take Marshall’s spread here, and monitor the over as both offense can be high octane.
