Flames vs. Fightin’ Blue Hens Gameday
The Liberty Flames travel to Newark on Friday night to face the Delaware Fightin’ Blue Hens in the Conference USA opener for both teams. Kickoff from Delaware Stadium is set for 7:00 PM ET on CBS Sports Network.
Liberty enters at 3-1 after beating Coastal Carolina 34-17 for its third straight victory. The Flames trailed 17-10 at halftime before scoring the final 24 points, with the ground game helping take over after the break.
Liberty brings the winning streak, but Delaware has done its best work at home this season.
Delaware is 2-2 after a rough 42-3 loss at Virginia. The Blue Hens are 2-0 at Delaware Stadium and 0-2 on the road, so getting back to Newark certainly won’t hurt.
These programs met for the first time last season, with Liberty winning 59-30 in Lynchburg. Both are 0-0 in CUSA play heading into Friday, giving the rematch a little more meaning this time around.

Delaware’s path has been much more home-and-road dependent. The Blue Hens beat Merrimack 42-7 and Coastal Carolina 22-14 in Newark, while losing 35-26 at Vanderbilt and 42-3 at Virginia.
Last year’s 59-30 Liberty victory is the only previous meeting between these programs. That game produced 89 points, although both teams have changed plenty since then.

Fightin’ Blue Hens Stats
Delaware has leaned heavily on its passing game through four games, throwing for 1,048 yards compared with 392 on the ground. The Blue Hens are averaging 23.3 points and 360 total yards per game.
Nick Minicucci has completed 59 of 103 passes for 838 yards, 5 TD’s and 3 interceptions. Sean Wilson leads the receiving corps with 292 yards and 3 TD’s, while Jo Silver tops the ground game with 205 rushing yards.
The bigger issue entering Friday is Minicucci’s availability.
He left the Virginia loss with an injury during the first half after completing 4 of 8 passes for 24 yards. Braden Streeter has seen the most work behind him this season, while Riley Trujillo also took snaps against Virginia.
Delaware has been much better defensively against the run than the scoreboard from Charlottesville might suggest, allowing just over 100 rushing yards per game. The Blue Hens also recorded a season-high five sacks against Virginia despite the lopsided final score.
Flames Stats
Liberty has found some offensive traction during its three-game winning streak. The Flames are averaging 30.5 points and better than 400 total yards per game, with the rushing attack producing nearly 190 yards per contest.
Kam Davis leads that ground game with 310 yards. He broke loose for a career-high 166 against Coastal Carolina, helping Liberty control the second half after going into the locker room down seven.
Deshawn Purdie has supplied the passing balance with 779 yards, 7 TD’s and no interceptions through four games. Makai Jackson has emerged as his top target with 379 receiving yards.
Liberty has also tightened things up defensively during the winning streak. The Flames held Ball State to 15 points and Coastal Carolina to 17, including a scoreless second half by the Chanticleers.
That’s a pretty useful combination heading into conference play: a running game that’s getting stronger and a QB who hasn’t been giving possessions away.

Minicucci has been Delaware’s QB1 through four games, throwing for 838 yards with 5 TD’s and 3 interceptions. His health is now the obvious question after he exited early against Virginia.
If Minicucci is available, Delaware gets back the passer who has handled the bulk of the offense all season. If he can’t go, the Blue Hens will have to turn to a much less experienced option against a Liberty team carrying some momentum into Newark.

Purdie has the cleaner setup entering Friday. Liberty can support him with Davis and the running game, which means the Flames don’t need their QB throwing it 35 or 40 times to move the football.
Delaware’s situation is harder to read until Minicucci’s status becomes clearer. Streeter has attempted 28 passes this season, while Trujillo saw action after Minicucci went down at Virginia.

The biggest concern with an Over ticket is Delaware’s QB situation, but 49.5 gives us some room to work with. Liberty is laying a touchdown for a reason, and the Flames have enough ways to create points without requiring Delaware to match them score for score.
I also like the game script if Liberty gets in front. Delaware can’t spend the second half protecting its QB and leaning on a conservative approach if the Blue Hens are chasing 10 or 14 points.
A Liberty lead should force Delaware to open things up, and that’s when this total gets interesting.
We also aren’t asking for some ridiculous Friday night shootout. A 31-20 type of game clears the number, and a couple of short fields or one explosive play can change the math quickly when the total is sitting below 50.
Liberty should supply its share, and I expect Delaware to contribute enough at home. I’m taking Over 49.5.
