Flames vs. Chanticleers Gameday
Week 4 gets rolling Thursday night at Brooks Stadium, where Liberty visits Coastal Carolina for a 7:30 PM ET kickoff on ESPN.
The Flames arrive at 2-1 after consecutive home wins, while the Chanticleers are 1-2 under first-year head coach Ryan Beard. Liberty opened with a 20-13 road loss at James Madison before beating Gardner-Webb 24-23 and hammering Ball State 51-15. That last one was considerably less stressful, with the Flames producing their best offensive performance of the young season.
Liberty finally found some breathing room Saturday; now the Flames have to prove it travels.
Coastal Carolina followed a 31-24 loss at West Virginia with a 45-7 home win over Fordham, then fell 22-14 at Delaware. The Chanticleers are back at Brooks Stadium, where their only appearance this season ended with 45 points and Ryan Beard’s first victory.
The programs haven’t met since the 2020 Cure Bowl, when Liberty escaped with a 37-34 overtime victory.
Thursday also brings Jamey Chadwell back to Coastal Carolina, where he spent five seasons as head coach before taking over the Flames.

Liberty Flames vs. Coastal Carolina Chanticleers Odds & Last 5
Liberty opened as a short favorite and remains -2.5 heading into Thursday, with the Flames around -130 on the moneyline and Coastal Carolina approximately +110.
The total is sitting around 52.5, leaving very little separation between these teams in the market. The Flames are riding a two-game winning streak after beating Gardner-Webb and Ball State at home. Their only road appearance ended in that seven-point loss at James Madison, so this is Liberty’s first chance to put a road win on the board.
Coastal Carolina is coming off a 22-14 loss at Delaware after splitting its first two games. The Chanticleers have played only once at Brooks Stadium, but they made it count with a 45-7 demolition of Fordham.

Coastal Carolina has scored 83 points through three games while averaging 27.7 per contest. The Chanticleers have generated 832 passing yards, with the aerial attack doing considerably more damage than a ground game averaging 146 yards per game.
Deuce Bailey has been the engine.
The redshirt freshman has completed 49 of 88 passes for 826 yards and eight touchdowns without throwing an interception, giving Coastal a legitimate big-play threat every time he drops back.
Eight touchdown passes without a pick is one pretty efficient way to introduce yourself to the Sun Belt.
Coastal has allowed 60 points through three games, including 31 at West Virginia and 22 at Delaware. The Chanticleers have shown they can create pressure, but keeping Liberty from controlling the game on the ground will be a major part of Thursday’s assignment. The injury picture is cleaner than the original report suggested.
There are currently no significant injuries listed for Coastal Carolina, so the Chanticleers should enter Thursday without a major availability issue hanging over the matchup.
Flames Stats
Liberty has scored 88 points through three games while averaging 29.3 per contest.
The Flames have produced 664 passing yards and 496 rushing yards, with their offense breaking loose for 460 total yards in Saturday’s win over Ball State. The ground game has been spread around. Kam Davis leads Liberty with 144 rushing yards, while Peyton Jones has added 136 and Jaylon Coleman gives the Flames another option in a backfield averaging 165.3 yards per game.
Liberty has been especially effective keeping drives alive, converting 19 of 41 third downs for a 46.3% success rate. The Flames have also controlled possession for nearly 33 minutes per game, giving their defense a little more room to operate.
That defense has surrendered 58 points through three games and hasn’t allowed more than 23 in any outing.
Liberty held James Madison to 20, Gardner-Webb to 23 and Ball State to 15, a useful bit of consistency heading into its second road game.

Flames vs. Chanticleers QB Matchup
Deuce Bailey has wasted little time making Coastal Carolina’s offense his own. Through three starts, he’s completed 49 of 88 passes for 826 yards, eight touchdowns and no interceptions while averaging more than nine yards per attempt. Bailey threw for 373 yards and three scores in his Coastal debut at West Virginia, then added three more touchdowns against Fordham.
Even in the loss at Delaware, he finished with 250 yards and two scores without turning the ball over.
Neither quarterback has thrown an interception, so somebody may finally have to blink Thursday night.
Deshawn Purdie has started all three games for Liberty, completing 36 of 64 passes for 563 yards and five touchdowns without an interception. He produced his best outing Saturday against Ball State, helping the Flames generate 248 passing yards and four touchdowns through the air.
Purdie hasn’t been asked to carry Liberty by himself because the Flames have been able to lean on their running game.
That balance gives him a different assignment from Bailey, whose explosive passing has driven much of Coastal’s offense. The matchup gives us two quarterbacks who have protected the football while attacking in very different ways. Bailey has supplied the bigger passing numbers, while Purdie operates behind a more balanced Liberty attack that has been considerably better on third down.
Liberty Flames vs. Coastal Carolina Chanticleers bottom line: Bailey can make Liberty pay in a hurry, but the Flames have more ways to move the chains if Thursday turns into something less pretty.

Here is my Flames Chanticleers free pick: I’m laying Liberty -2.5 Thursday night at Brooks Stadium.
Liberty finally found the accelerator against Ball State, rolling up a 51-15 win after surviving Gardner-Webb by one the previous week. The Flames are averaging 29.3 points and converting 46.3% of their third downs, which matters in a game carrying a one-possession spread. They also own the better defensive efficiency through three weeks.
Coastal Carolina can absolutely make this uncomfortable. Deuce Bailey has thrown eight touchdown passes without an interception, and the Chanticleers have enough explosive ability through the air to punish Liberty if the secondary gets careless.
Bailey makes Coastal dangerous, but Liberty has the more balanced path to covering this short number.
The difference for me is Liberty’s ability to stay on schedule. The Flames are averaging 165.3 rushing yards per game, while Coastal has been more dependent on Bailey creating chunk plays through the air.
There is also some familiarity here. Jamey Chadwell spent five seasons running Coastal Carolina, so Liberty shouldn’t be walking into Conway surprised by much.
Coastal is dangerous enough to hang around. At less than a field goal, though, I want the more complete team.
