Gamecocks Stats
South Carolina couldn’t keep pace with Alabama last week.
The Crimson Tide repeatedly found explosive plays and forced the Gamecocks to spend much of the night chasing the scoreboard. That’s a dangerous script for a South Carolina offense that would rather stay balanced.
Matt Fuller provided one of the bright spots.
The sophomore rushed for 112 yards and continued to establish himself as the primary option in the backfield. His production gives South Carolina something dependable to build around when the passing game isn’t cooperating.
LaNorris Sellers supplies another rushing threat from the QB position.
That combination can make South Carolina difficult to defend when the Gamecocks stay ahead of schedule. Defenses have to account for the designed run while also worrying about Sellers escaping once the original play breaks down.
The Gamecocks need more consistency once drives get moving.
The first two conference games have exposed problems that were much easier to hide during the opening portion of the schedule. SEC defenses tend to be inconsiderate that way.
Wildcats Stats
Kentucky’s backfield took over against South Alabama.
The Wildcats rushed for 376 yards and 5 TD’s, producing the program’s first game with three 100-yard running backs. C.J. Baxter led the group with 149 yards.
Jason Patterson added 137 yards and three scores.
Jovantae Barnes completed the trio with 100 yards and a TD. The three backs also produced runs of 53, 75 and 39 yards, giving Kentucky explosiveness without needing to put the entire offense on Minchey’s arm.
The Wildcats have now won consecutive games after dropping their SEC opener.
Three 100-yard running backs is less a depth chart and more an administrative problem for the opposing defense.
Stein now has options when opponents start adjusting to the backfield.
Kentucky can rotate fresh runners, attack different gaps and use that attention to create throwing lanes. That’s a much healthier offensive formula than asking Minchey to manufacture everything himself.
Wildcats vs. Gamecocks QB Matchup
LaNorris Sellers remains the centerpiece of South Carolina’s offense.
The Gamecocks QB has thrown for 833 yards with 6 TD’s and 4 interceptions through four games. His ability to create outside the pocket adds another dimension that Kentucky has to account for on passing downs.
Kenny Minchey has been more protective of the football.
The Kentucky QB has thrown for 876 yards with 8 TD’s and one interception. His efficiency has allowed Stein to stay aggressive without constantly putting the offense at risk.

Sellers is at his best when structure disappears.
Kentucky can win the initial pass rush and still lose the play if Sellers escapes containment. Keeping him bottled up matters as much as generating pressure in the first place.
Minchey has a different luxury.
Kentucky’s rushing depth means he can take favorable matchups instead of forcing throws into coverage. If South Carolina crowds the box, his ability to make the simple throw becomes considerably more important than producing some heroic QB stat line.
Kentucky Wildcats vs. South Carolina Gamecocks bottom line: Kentucky brings the more balanced offensive setup, while Sellers gives South Carolina enough improvisational ability to keep pressure on the scoreboard.

- Kentucky is 9-3 in over/under as an underdog in their last 12 games.
- Also, the Gamecocks have a 17-5 over/under record after a loss in their last 22 games.

Wildcats Gamecocks Free Pick: Over 53.5
Here is my Wildcats Gamecocks free pick: I’m taking Over 53.5. This number doesn’t require a track meet, and both offenses have enough ways to manufacture points without asking either QB to play superhero for four quarters.
South Carolina’s best wrinkle is Sellers. His mobility forces Kentucky to account for another runner on every broken play, and that becomes especially useful when the Gamecocks fall behind the chains. Nothing murders a nice defensive call quite like the QB escaping through the back door.
Neither offense needs perfection to reach this number, which is convenient because perfection appears to be unavailable.
Kentucky brings the steadier passing setup with Minchey protecting the football and Stein giving him an offense that doesn’t require reckless throws. If South Carolina starts committing extra bodies near the line of scrimmage, the Wildcats should get opportunities outside.
The three-point spread matters too. I’m looking for a competitive game where both teams still need points in the fourth quarter instead of somebody spending eight minutes killing clock with a three-score lead. Give me Kentucky-South Carolina Over 53.5.
