The Kansas State Wildcats visit the Cincinnati Bearcats Saturday night with both teams bringing perfect 3-0 records into their Big 12 opener. Kickoff is set for 7:00 PM ET at Nippert Stadium on ESPN2.
K-State swept its three-game homestand, beating Nicholls 71-3, Washington State 34-7 and Tulane 31-20. Saturday is the Wildcats’ first road game and their first away test under new head coach Collin Klein.
Avery Johnson made sure they arrived unbeaten.
K-State finally leaves Manhattan, and an unbeaten Cincinnati team under the Nippert lights isn’t exactly a sightseeing trip.
Cincinnati opened with a 34-15 win over Boston College and crushed Western Carolina 62-10 before rallying past Miami (Ohio) 35-31 last Saturday. The Bearcats trailed 28-7 at halftime before completing their biggest second-half comeback in 30 years.
That Miami game was played across town at TQL Stadium, making this Cincinnati’s first game back at Nippert since the Western Carolina win.

Bearcats Stats
Cincinnati has scored 131 points through three games, with its running game doing plenty of the heavy lifting. The Bearcats have rushed for 814 yards and have multiple backs capable of carrying the load.
Gi’Bran Payne leads the running backs with 242 yards and two touchdowns. Cole Tabb has added 187 yards and three scores, including the 53-yard touchdown that completed Cincinnati’s comeback against Miami.
JC French IV has provided balance through the air.
French has completed 62 of 81 passes for 631 yards, five touchdowns and no interceptions. JV Gibson leads Cincinnati with 201 receiving yards and has caught a touchdown in all three games.
Cincinnati spotted Miami 21 points last week and still won, although Scott Satterfield probably doesn’t need that adventure twice.
The Bearcats have allowed 56 points while recording eight sacks.
Their first Big 12 injury report listed offensive lineman Aiden Pastoriza, tight end DaMari Witherspoon and receiver Pierce Ayers out, with linebacker Filip Maciorowski questionable.
Wildcats Stats
Kansas State has scored 136 points and allowed only 30 through three games. The Wildcats are averaging 45.3 points while holding opponents to 10.0, and their defense ranks among the country’s best through the opening month.
K-State has been particularly nasty against the pass.
The Wildcats are allowing only 86.7 passing yards per game, the best mark in the FBS, while surrendering 182.7 total yards per game. They also recorded six sacks and 12 tackles for loss against Tulane.
Avery Johnson has supplied plenty of offense himself.
Johnson has thrown for 618 yards and six touchdowns while adding a team-high 253 rushing yards. He exploded for 152 yards and two rushing touchdowns against Tulane, including a 66-yard run that changed the game.
Rodney Fields Jr. has added 224 rushing yards, while Jaron Tibbs leads the receiving corps with 162 yards.
The injury report is worth watching behind Johnson. Backup Blake Barnett is out, while fellow quarterbacks Jacob Knuth and Dillon Duff opened the week as questionable.

JC French IV has settled in quickly after transferring from Georgia Southern. He’s completing 76.5% of his passes for 631 yards, five touchdowns and no interceptions through three games.
His best performance came when Cincinnati needed it most.
French threw for 309 yards and two touchdowns against Miami, helping the Bearcats climb out of that 28-7 halftime hole. He completed 12 of 14 fourth-quarter passes and connected with Gibson for the touchdown that pulled Cincinnati within three.
Avery Johnson brings considerably more danger with his legs.
The K-State senior has thrown for 618 yards and six touchdowns while becoming the first player in school history to reach 6,000 career passing yards and 1,500 rushing yards. He’s also K-State’s career leader in touchdown passes.

Johnson showed the full package against Tulane. He threw for 227 yards, rushed for 152 and accounted for two touchdowns on the ground while K-State pulled away.
French has been the more efficient passer so far.
Johnson brings the bigger improvisational problem.
At Nippert at night, both quarterbacks should get opportunities to make this Big 12 opener considerably more interesting than either defense would prefer.
Kansas State Wildcats vs. Cincinnati Bearcats bottom line: K-State brings the better defensive numbers and Johnson’s game-breaking mobility, but Cincinnati has enough offensive balance and a quarterback protecting the football extremely well to make the Wildcats earn their first road win.

Avery Johnson is the problem for Cincinnati. He can beat the Bearcats through the air or with his legs, and his 152 rushing yards against Tulane were a reminder that containing him for four quarters is easier on the whiteboard.
Two unbeaten Big 12 teams with mobile quarterbacks under the Nippert lights works just fine for an Over ticket.
JC French gives Cincinnati its own answer. He’s completing better than 76% of his passes without an interception, and the Bearcats just erased a 21-point halftime deficit against Miami.
K-State’s defense is excellent, but Cincinnati has enough balance to contribute at home. I expect both quarterbacks to create scoring chances and push this beyond the number.
