Dukes vs. Aztecs Gameday
James Madison heads west Saturday night for its first road game of the season, visiting San Diego State at Snapdragon Stadium. The Dukes arrive 2-0 after beating Liberty 20-13 and demolishing Wagner 87-3, while the Aztecs are 1-1 after splitting games against Portland State and UCLA. The CW has the broadcast at 10:00 PM ET.
JMU’s trip comes after the most explosive scoring performance in program history. The Dukes scored 12 touchdowns against Wagner, including six rushing, three passing and three on special teams.
Eighty-seven points will get everyone’s attention, even when Wagner is standing on the other sideline.
San Diego State gets the Dukes at home after a considerably less enjoyable Saturday. The Aztecs followed their 53-20 win over Portland State with a 28-10 loss at UCLA, leaving Sean Lewis plenty to clean up before returning to Snapdragon Stadium.
This is also SDSU’s first season as a Pac-12 member, although Saturday remains a nonconference game.

James Madison Dukes vs. San Diego State Aztecs Odds & Last 5
San Diego State opened as a small home favorite, with the Aztecs around -130 on the moneyline and James Madison approximately +108. The spread was SDSU -2.5 with the total at 46.5.
There’s been some movement since then. San Diego State -2.5 remains available, although other sportsbooks have dropped the Aztecs to -1.5 while keeping the total at 46.5.
JMU’s first two games couldn’t have looked much different. The Dukes survived Liberty 20-13 before turning the Wagner game into an 87-3 demolition that was essentially finished before everyone found their seats.
San Diego State has experienced its own extremes.
The Aztecs scored 53 against Portland State and then managed only 10 at UCLA. Saturday should tell us considerably more about both teams than either of those mismatches did.
Aztecs Stats
San Diego State has leaned heavily on its running game through two weeks. The Aztecs have generated 381 rushing yards, with Lucky Sutton leading the group at 139 yards and three touchdowns.
Javion Kinnard has added 127 rushing yards, giving Sean Lewis another option when SDSU wants to keep the offense on the ground. That’s likely to remain important against a JMU defense allowing only eight points per game.
The Aztecs would probably prefer Saturday look more like Portland State than their trip to UCLA.
Jayden Denegal has thrown for 182 yards with three touchdowns and two interceptions. Nathan Acevedo and Justius Lowe have supplied some production outside, but the passing game hasn’t been nearly as dependable as the rushing attack.
Defensively, San Diego State has already produced three interceptions and three sacks. That unit gets its most interesting assignment yet against a JMU offense that has scored 107 points through two games.
The Aztecs are also back at Snapdragon Stadium, where they’ve won seven consecutive games. That home streak gets a legitimate test from an unbeaten JMU team making its first trip to California.
Dukes Stats
James Madison has started 2-0 under Billy Napier, following its seven-point win over Liberty with the program-record 87-point eruption against Wagner. The Dukes have scored 107 points while allowing only 16.
The rushing attack has been the foundation. JMU has accumulated 463 yards on the ground, with Nick Herman coming off a 132-yard, two-touchdown performance against Wagner that included a 77-yard scoring run.
The Dukes certainly didn’t need one player to do everything last week.
George Pettaway scored three rushing touchdowns, while JMU also returned both a kickoff and a punt for touchdowns and recovered a blocked punt in the end zone. When you’re scoring on offense and special teams, 87 becomes slightly easier to explain.
Defensively, James Madison held Wagner to only 86 rushing yards on 40 attempts. The Dukes have surrendered just 16 points through eight quarters and now face an SDSU offense that struggled badly to finish drives at UCLA.
The obvious change is location. JMU played its first two games at Bridgeforth Stadium and now crosses three time zones for a 7:00 PM local kickoff, giving the Dukes their first road environment of the Napier era.

Dukes vs. Aztecs QB Matchup
Jayden Denegal remains the key piece for a San Diego State passing game that hasn’t found much consistency through two games. The Aztecs have been much more productive running the football, which has allowed them to keep some pressure off their quarterback.
Turnovers are the bigger concern.
Denegal has thrown three touchdowns but also been intercepted twice, and James Madison has allowed only 16 points all season. Giving the Dukes short fields would be an excellent way to turn a close home game into something considerably less comfortable.
Coleman doesn’t need another 87-point afternoon, but his first road start will demand considerably more patience.
Camden Coleman has thrown for 228 yards with one touchdown and no interceptions while directing an offense that has spread the work around. JMU has also used JC Evans and Alonza Maiden, particularly during last week’s runaway win.
Coleman’s challenge is different Saturday. Instead of playing at Bridgeforth Stadium with an enormous margin for error, he gets his first road start against an SDSU defense that has already intercepted three passes.
James Madison Dukes vs. San Diego State Aztecs bottom line: JMU’s 87-point eruption was impossible to ignore, but a cross-country road debut against an Aztecs team that has won seven straight at Snapdragon should provide a much less accommodating Saturday night.

Here is my Aztecs Dukes free pick: San Diego State -2.5 is my play Saturday night. James Madison’s 2-0 record deserves respect, but this is a completely different assignment than Liberty and Wagner in Harrisonburg. The Dukes now fly across the country for their first road game.
San Diego State’s 28-10 loss at UCLA wasn’t pretty, but the Aztecs still have a running game capable of making this uncomfortable. Lucky Sutton and Javion Kinnard give them multiple options on the ground. At home, that matters against a JMU defense finally stepping up in competition.
Beating Wagner 87-3 was impressive, although Wagner isn’t making the trip to San Diego.
The Dukes have been excellent defensively, but Saturday also asks Camden Coleman to make his first road start in a late-night game three time zones away. San Diego State has enough defensive playmakers to make those circumstances matter. I’m also willing to forgive one ugly afternoon at UCLA.
The Aztecs have won seven straight at Snapdragon Stadium, and their ability to respond after losses gives this spot additional appeal. JMU is good enough to keep things tight. That’s exactly why I’m comfortable laying less than a field goal.
I’ll trust the home team in a close one. San Diego State -2.5 is my play.
