The Houston Cougars will head to Dallas and take on the SMU Mustangs from Gerald J. Ford Stadium this weekend on the NFL Network. SMU comes in as the 3-point favorites here at home, with the total opening at 65.5.
HISTORY: SMU and Navy have a bit of an extended history, with a pair of four-game series prior to their time as AAC rivals. Navy leads the all-time series 13-10, but SMU has won the last two meetings.
Houston Cougars
Houston comes into Dallas on the heels of a strong month of October. After dropped to 2-3 after a three-point loss to Tulane, the Cougars turned things around with a comeback victory over Memphis, a two-score road win against Navy, and they kept the momentum going on their homecoming day.
In Week 9, Houston defeated South Florida, 42-27, dropping to 3-5 ATS this season.
Houston scores 33.5 points per game, while allowing 31.1 ppg.
Clayton Tune brings a ton of experience to the position. The senior quarterback’s play has been the key ingredient to the turnaround in Houston. Tune set a season-high with 366 yards and tossed three touchdowns in the comeback win over Memphis, tossed a season-best five touchdowns in the win over Navy, and beat his season-high in the win over USF with 380 yards.
Tune has thrown for 2,208 passing yards with 21 touchdowns to four interceptions, while rushing for 275 yards and three scores through seven starts this season.
Brandon Campbell and Ta’Zhawn Henry split the load early for Houston, but true freshman Stacy Sneed has received an uptick in work over the past two games. With Henry on the shelf, and Campbell going down, Snell gained 100 yards in the win over Navy, and he scored twice versus USF last weekend. It’s an encouraging sign for a run game that was dormant for a few weeks, and Snell should see more opportunities this weekend.
Tank Dell is one of the best receivers in the country and he should be playing on Sundays in the future. Dell surpassed the 2,000-yard mark for his career after burning crosstown rival Rice for the second year in a row, and he caught ten passes in win over Memphis. Dell is among conference leaders with 60 receptions, 739 receiving yards and ten touchdowns.
SMU Mustangs
SMU responded to a three-game skid by winning two of their last three games. A Friday night win over Navy snapped the losing streak, then they nearly altered CIncinnati’s season, but lost by two at home. The Mustang cross the start border and picked up their first win outside of the Lone Star state last weekend.
In Week 6, SMU beat Tulsa, 45-34, dropping to 4-4 against the spread this season.
Tanner Mordecai nearly threw 40 touchdowns last season, but this season has been a lot slower. The fifth-year senior suffered a concussion versus Cincinnati, and missed last week’s bout, leaving his status for this weekend in the air. Preston Stone stepped in and delivered on the road against Tulsa, and he may get the call again for the Houston.s.
Rashee RIce has eclipse the 2,000-yard mark for his career with this great start. The senior wideout has established himself as the number one option, recording 130 yards or more in each of the first three games. Rice ranks among the nations leaders with 62 receptions and 982 receiving yards.
NCAA Football Handicapping Trends

Free Week 10 NCAA Football Final Analysis:
Houston’s momentum has my attention here. The way the Cougars stopped the bleeding and turned things around has been admirable, and that energy could travel into Dallas. If Mordecai is unable to go, Cougs will have a distinct advantage at the quarterback position with one of the most experienced players in the country taking on a signal caller making his second start.
Houston can become bowl eligible with a win, and lowly Temple coming to town and a spot in the AAC title game still up for grabs, bet on them to stay sharp for this minor road trip.
Take Houston’s spread for this Lone Star battle.
