The Houston Cougars find themselves headed towards an AAC West Division title. A win over the SMU Mustangs combined with a Tulane loss to South Florida this weekend, could essentially put the Cougs in the AAC Conference title game.
The Cougars are 4 – 0 in conference play, and lead the SMU Mustangs and Tulane Green Wave who sit tied at 2 – 2 in the West Division standings. Houston will be tested over their last four games of the 2018 campaign. They’ll face Tulane, Temple, and will finish the season at Memphis after leaving Gerald J. Ford Stadium this Saturday night against SMU.
All four teams are still hoping to secure bowl bids, and Temple is also 4 – 0 in AAC play as they travel to play undefeated Central Florida this weekend.
The SMU Mustangs fell to 3 – 5 on the season after their overtime loss to Cincinnati last weekend, 26 – 20. The Bearcats kicked the game-tying FG as regulation time expired, and an 86-yard interception return in OT led to the Mustang loss.
The Houston Cougars advanced to 7 – 1 on the season after a shoot-out win over South Florida last weekend, 57 – 36.
Head Coach Major Applewhite has already matched the seven win mark that landed the Cougars in the Hawaii Bowl in 2017. His inaugural campaign with the Cougars last season led to the Cougars being among the favorites to win the AAC title in 2018. The Cougars sit alone on top of the AAC West Division entering this weekend.
UCF and Temple are both 4 – 0 in AAC play and sit tied atop the East Division sharing the top spot in the standings. They will meet this weekend in Orlando, and that result could potentially pit Houston with the winner of that game, setting up a potential meeting in the AAC Championship Game.
The Cougars offense has been nearly impossible to stop this season, leading the nation in total yards per contest averaging 570.6 a contest.
Junior QB D’Eriq King leads an offense that is putting up 49.8 points per game, and that is good enough to be ranked 2nd in all of college football. Not only has King thrown for 28 TD passes, but he has also added 11 scores with his legs. King has thrown for over 400 yards three times this season, and scored 5 TDs in two of those games.
In the Cougars’ win over South Florida this past weekend, King put up 419 passing yards, and accounted for 7 scores overall. With 5 TD passes and 2 TD runs, King officially ran the ball 12 times for 132 yards in the 56 – 37 win over the Bulls, while going 28 for 40 in the passing game.
Junior QB Ben Hicks is now under the tutelage of the same man who helped shape Davis Webb at California. Sonny However, Dykes is now utilizing two quarterbacks, as freshmen William Brown has emerged as a useful tool in Dykes’ offensive scheme.
SMU started the year 0 – 3, but had won 3 of their last 4 games heading into last weekend’s game with Cincinnati. Hoping to hit the .500 mark for the first time this season, the Mustangs watched the Bearcats kick a game-tying field goal at the end of regulation time.
The SMU offense took the field first in OT, and on third down Ben Hicks threw an interception that was taken back 86 yards the other way for a TD that ended the game. it was Hicks first and only pick of the contest, and it now leaves the Mustangs facing a 3 – 5 record while still chasing a bowl bid.
The Mustangs will have to win 3 of their last 4 games in order to become bowl eligible.
Starting that run as +14 underdogs to the Cougars doesn’t exactly stream confidence towards getting the first of those needed wins in the books.
The SMU ground game is virtually non-existent, as they rank 124th out of 130 FBS teams in rushing yards per game (98.6). Luckily for the Mustangs, the Houston Cougar defense ranks last in the nation in passing yards allowed, giving up 324.8 yards per outing.
There’s a term we use when we expect points to come in a college football game. I expect an old-fashioned Texas-sized shootout to go down at the OK Corral on Saturday night. Well, at least the Corral found when you enter Gerald J. Ford Stadium, that offers beverages and burgers too!

Free Week 10 NCAA Football Pick
The play to make in this contest points right to the total, as 71 points is simply going to happen. I expect the likes of a game in the 40’s to shape out, with Houston possibly finding 50+ when the fat lady starts to do her thing.
4* Free NCAA Betting Pick: The Houston Cougars are favored at -13, with a 71 attached to the total. Free ATS or O/U final score pick provided below!
As she sings loud, the fat lady will rejoice with us, when they topple the Over 71 offer from the line setters. Houston will put up their points and roll to 5 – 0 in AAC play, leaving SMU reeling at 3 – 6 on the year.
