HISTORY: Houston and Memphis has faced off consistently since 1996, dating back to their time as Conference USA rivals. Houston leads the all-time series 16-14, but Memphis has won four of the last five matchups.
Houston Cougars
Houston had a rough month of September to start the season. The Cougars got scares from in-state foes UTSA and Rice, and fell to future Big 12 rivals Texas Tech and Kansas. They got another close call in their AAC opener.
In Week 5, Houston lost to Tulane at home, 27-24, dropping to 1-4 against the spread this season.
Clayton Tune brings a ton of experience to the position, but it hasn’t translated into wins here in 2022. He’s been solid in every game, but multiple fourth quarter turnovers have altered results and put the Cougs in a win-now situation.
Tune has thrown for 1,201 passing yards with nine touchdowns to three interceptions, while rushing for 194 yards and two scores during September.
Brandon Campbell and Ta’Zhawn Henry have split the load early for Houston. Henry had a big game against KU, gaining 163 total yards (56 rush, 107 rec), while scoring a rushing and receiving touchdown and he followed it up with a 100-yard performance versus Rice. Campbell has come over from USC and given the Cougars a reliable, three-down presence early. The hometown product totaled 134 yards (80 rush, 54 rec), including a 18-yard touchdown run in the lost to Texas Tech.
Nathaniel Dell has picked up where he left off as one of the best receivers in the country. Dell racked up 1,179 receiving yards in 2021, and he surpassed the 2,000-yard career mark with his impressive seven-catch, 120-yard performance against the Red Raiders. The senior wideout topped that number against Rice, and he’s among conference leaders with 33 receptions, 453 receiving yards and five touchdowns.
Memphis Tigers
Memphis responded to a season opening loss to border rival Mississippi State by closing the first month of action with three wins. The Tigers opened AAC play with a road win over Navy, then they took down Arkansas State in their home opener. Ryan Silverfield’s team prevailed in another shootout against North Texas, and started the month on strong note with a home conference win.
In Week 5, Memphis defeated Temple at home, 24-3, covering for the second time this season.
It feels like Seth Henigan is in the midst of a nice second-year leap. The sophomore QB looks a lot more comfortable this season, and he’s protecting the football better. Henigan burned his hometown team last weekend with the win over North Texas, and he torched Navy for a career-best 415 passing yards in the AAC opener.
Henigan has thrown for 1,276 passing yards with nine touchdowns to one interception, and he scored a pair of rushing touchdowns through the first five games of the season..
Brandon Thomas, Jeyvon Ducker, and Asa Martin all received some work in the first five games. Thomas led the Tigers in rushing last season, and he’s scored twice in back-to-back games. Ducker has provides some electricity, and he’s gained 235 yards on 39 touches. Martin, a fifth-year senior, gained 57 yards on 10 touches in the win over North Texas.
Henigan has spread the ball out well through the first month of the season, but his rapport with Caden Prieskorn has stood out the most. The junior tight end has served as a security blanket for the QB, and they’ve connected for touchdowns in each of the past four games (wins). Prieskorn has a caught a team-lead 18 receptions for 138 yards and four touchdowns. Gabe Rogers leads the receiver core with 231 receiving yards.

The Tigers have been sharper on both sides of the ball, and they find themselves in a very manageable spot.
Dana Holgersen isn’t on the hot seat by any means, but the timing of this matchup, along with the location, is a bad mix for Houston here. It’s hard to see them fixing them on the road on a short week, so Memphis should lay the points comfortably. Memphis by 3
