The Georgia State Panthers will travel to West Point and take on the Army Black Knights from Mitchie Stadium this Saturday on CBSS. The Black Knights come into this one as the 7-point favorites at home here, with the total opening at 54.5.
HISTORY: Army and Georgia State have faced off in Atlanta twice, and the Black Knights won last year’s meeting, 43-10.
Georgia State Panthers
Georgia State continues to acquire quality non-conference play, but they also continue to fall just a bit short on the scoreboard. This is truly the most competitive winless team in the country. Georgia State has dealt with the Carolina’s in all four of their matchups, starting with a solid Week 1 showing in Columbia versus South Carolina. The Panthers fell victims to Beamer-Ball after taking a 2-point lead in the third quarter, but this is only the beginning.
Georgia State boldly scheduled North Carolina for their home opener, and nearly came away with a big upset. A fourth-quarter touchdown would save UNC, and the same thing would happen to a more dramatic extent when the Panthers loss to Charlotte on a last second score. Their troubles continued when they hosted a conference power the following Saturday.
Last Saturday, Georgia State lost their Sun Belt opener to Coastal Carolina, 24-41, dropping to 1-3 ATS this season.
Darren Grainger has given mixed results in his first month of action. The senior quarterback was ineffective in the opening contest versus SC, but he played well very the home opener against UNC. After completing just 24% of his passes in Week 1, Grainger threw for three touchdowns and added 75 yards on the ground in the loss to the Tar Heels. He threw four scores in the shootout with Charlotte, but he did not perform well against his hometown team, Coastal Carolina.
Grainger thrown for 871 passing yards with nine touchdowns to four interceptions, while adding 185 yards and a score on the ground.
Tucker Gregg, Marcus Carroll, and Jamyest Williams have all split the load early. Gregg leads the squad early on with 225 yards and three touchdowns after a big game versus Charlotte. Carroll missed the UNC game, but he’s second with 190 yards over three contests.
Jamari Thrash has been the number reed for Grainger early this season. The junior wideout leads the Panthers in receptions (21) and receiving yards (381). Robert Lewis has scored in every game this season, and he went off for a career-high 115 yards against UNC. Lewis is second on the team with 13 catches for 271 yards, while pacing the team with five touchdowns.
Army Black Knights
Army has found themselves in a few shootouts early. The Black Knights opened their season in Conway, falling in to Coastal Carolina after an eventful fourth quarter. Army hosted UTSA in their home opener, and watched Cade Ballard throw for an unheard of 200+ passing yards. After failing to hold off the Roadrunners in overtime, the Cadets got a much more favorable matchup the following weekend.
Last time out, Army hopped into the win column with a rout of Villanova, 49-10, covering the 14-point spread.
The Black Knights have managed to use two QBs effectively early. Cade Ballard has brought the passing element to the offense, and his performance against UTSA was great by Army’s standards, tossing for 221 yards, while adding 58 yards on the ground.
Tyhier Tyler took the wheel versus Villanova. After tossing touchdowns in each of the first two games, the veteran dual-threat QB scored three times on the ground against the Wildcats. Tyler’s selfless in his role, and it allows both QBs to thrive. Tyler has thrown for 131 yards and a pair of touchdowns, while adding 143 yards and four scores through the Cadets first three games.
Tyrell Robinson, Tyson Riley, and Jakobi Buchanan have all contributed early. Robinson rushed for 603 yards last season, and he’s on pace to break that with a team-lead 249 rushing yards early. Riley got it going against Nova, gashing them for 158 yards, including a 70-yard touchdown run. Buchanan is the bruiser of the rotation and he’s gained 116 yards and scored three times thus far.
Ay’Juan Marshall leads the wideout room with four catches for 141 receiving yards and two scores.
Look for Army to hopefully tighten the bolts defensively after a pair of high scoring affairs to open the season.

Georgia State has struggled to protect the quarterback and stop the run. Army’s really good at the latter, and with the rain set to continue and alter a lot of the weekend action on the East Coast, this one is right up their alley. The Panthers are going to have the play the Black Knights’ game in West Point, and we don’t think it ends well for them. Another fifth straight loss, in the rain, will be painful for the Panthers, but it’s looking likely. The Cadets should lay the points here. Army by 7.
