The Georgia Southern Eagles will travel to Conway and take on the Coastal Carolina Chanticleers this Saturday on ESPN+. Coastal Carolina will open as the 10-point favorites to win here at home, with the total opening at 64.
HISTORY: Coastal Carolina and Georgia Southern’s rivalry dates back to their time as FCS powers. Southern leads the all-time series 5-3, but Coastal has won the last two matchups by double figures.
Georgia Southern Eagles
Georgia Southern has enjoyed a nice start to the 2022 season, largely in part to the biggest win in school history. The Eagles hosted Morgan State in the opener, and covered a massive 39-point margin with a victory, but their feat in Week 2 was a bit more unseen. Georgia Southern went into Lincoln and defeated Nebraska, putting a nail in the Scott Frost experiment. It was impossible to follow up and top that, and despite falling to UAB on the road in Week 3, the Eagles got back in the win column seven days later.
Last weekend, Georgia Southern closed their non-conference slate with a win over Ball State at home, covering the 10-point spread and improving to 3-1 ATS.
Kyle Vantrease has come in and grasped Clay Helton’s aerial attack swiftly. The Buffalo transfer tossed four touchdowns in his debut, then threw for a career-high 409 yards in the upset win over Nebraska. Vantrease is going give the Sun Belt some this Fall, if he can cut down on the turnovers.
Vantrease has 1,290 passing yards with eight touchdowns to six interceptions and a pair of rushing scores through the first month of the season.
Junior running backs Jalen White and Gerald Green have split the load early for the Eagles. White scored two touchdowns in each of the first three games, and he leads them with 305 rushing yards. Green has rushed for 260 yards and four touchdowns thus far.
Derwin Burgess Jr. has come out of the gate strong after a solid freshman season. He’s on pace to triple his total from last year after a 12-catch performance against the Huskers, and 133 yards in the win over Ball State. Khaleb Hood is also on pace to set a new personal-best after catching six or more passes in the first three games. Burgess Jr. leads in receptions (25), receiving yards (305), and touchdowns (6). Hood is second in each category with 23 catches for 247 yards and four scores.
Coastal Carolina Chanticleers
Coastal Carolina comes into October with an ideal 4-0 start. A pair of three-touchdown performances from Grayson McCall led them to home victories over Army and Gardner-Webb to open the year. The Chanticleers then picked up a comeback victory over Buffalo the following Saturday, and they opened Sun Belt play on a strong note last weekend.
In Week 4, Coastal Carolina defeated Georgia State in Atlanta, 41-24, improving to 2-2 ATS this season.
Grayson McCall has improved his NFL stock during the month of September. McCall has put on his cape for three heroic performances already, and he looks great in his first road contest last week. McCall makes Coastal the favorites to capture the Sun Belt crown, and potentially more.
McCall has thrown for 1,001 passing yards with 11 touchdowns to one interceptions, and added 91 yards and two scores on the ground through the first four games.
Coastal has received great production from Reese White and CJ Beasley early on. White opened the season with an 133-yard performance against Army, but there’s a chance he misses this one due to an injury picked up versus Buffalo. Beasley stepped up and recorded a career-high 142 yards against Georgia State, and he leads CCU in rushing with 345 yards.
Sam Pinckney, has come over Georgia State and emerged as McCall’s favorite target early. The fifth-year has five passes or more in each of the past three games, and he leads Coastal in receptions (22) and receiving yards (336). Redshirt freshman Jared Brown had a big day against the Panthers, going for 129 yards and two touchdowns.

Hurricane Ian has left it’s mark, and the aftermath could alter any point outcome here, so beware. The number of 65 feels so attainable with these two offenses, so we’ll sway that way.
