Eagles vs. Mountaineers Gameday for JLab Birmingham Bowl
Welcome to Birmingham, where conference familiarity meets postseason chaos. The 2025 JLab Birmingham Bowl features a Sun Belt rematch as the Georgia Southern Eagles square off against the Appalachian State Mountaineers at Protective Stadium on December 29th at 2:00 PM, live on ESPN.
Same league, same region, and absolutely no secrets left between these two.
Georgia Southern finished the regular season at an even 6-6, which feels about right if you watched them all year. The Eagles were shaky away from home at 2-4 and are still trying to erase the memory of last season’s bowl loss to Sam Houston in the New Orleans Bowl.
Still, when their offense gets rolling, they can trade punches with just about anyone in the Sun Belt.
Appalachian State limps into bowl season at 5-7, thanks largely to a rough 2-6 run in conference play. The Mountaineers were close more often than not, including a 25-23 loss to Georgia Southern earlier this season that probably still stings. Now they get a second shot, on a neutral field, with revenge very much on the menu.
Georgia Southern has won the last two meetings, which adds a little extra spice to this bowl matchup. Familiar foes, postseason stakes, and bragging rights on the line — Sun Belt chaos at its finest.

Georgia Southern Eagles vs. Appalachian State Mountaineers Odds & Last 5
The betting market gives Georgia Southern a slight edge, installing the Eagles as -131 favorites on the moneyline, while Appalachian State comes back at +110. The spread sits at Eagles -2.5, with the total posted at a lofty 59.5, signaling expectations of fireworks rather than a defensive slugfest.
Georgia Southern enters off a solid 24-19 win over Marshall, showing just enough defense to survive while the offense did its job. Appalachian State, meanwhile, comes off a heartbreaking 30-29 loss to Arkansas State, the kind of result that perfectly summarizes their season: competitive, dramatic, and just short.
Mountaineers Stats
Offensively, Appalachian State has been a tale of two units. The passing game has been productive, ranking 36th nationally with 3,144 yards, while the rushing attack has lagged well behind, ranking 101st. They’ve scored 304 points, which puts them firmly in the middle of the FBS pack.
Defense has been the bigger issue. The Mountaineers have allowed 358 points, ranking near the bottom nationally. However, they compensate by creating havoc, sitting top-15 in both sacks (28) and interceptions (12). If chaos counts as a defensive philosophy, App State executes it well.
At quarterback, JJ Kohl and AJ Swann have split duties, combining for nearly 3,000 passing yards. Rashod Dubinion leads the ground game with 868 rushing yards, while Jaden Barnes tops the receiving chart. Injury concerns linger, which could test depth in a game likely to demand four full quarters.

Eagles Stats
Georgia Southern’s offense has lived in the “good enough to be dangerous” zone all season. They rank 45th in passing yards and 78th in rushing, scoring 334 points overall. When the passing game clicks, the Eagles can push tempo and stress defenses quickly.
Defensively, it’s been a different story. The Eagles have allowed 410 points, landing them near the bottom nationally. The silver lining is their knack for forcing turnovers, ranking top 10 in both interceptions and fumbles recovered. It’s a bend, break, and then steal-the-ball approach.
Recent performances have been wildly inconsistent. Wins over Marshall and Coastal Carolina were encouraging, while a blowout loss to Old Dominion exposed defensive flaws. Injuries to key contributors add another variable, though JC French IV and Camden Brown remain the engines of the offense.

Eagles vs. Mountaineers QB Matchup
For Appalachian State, JJ Kohl has been efficient, throwing for 1,465 yards with 12 touchdowns and just two interceptions. AJ Swann adds volume with 1,495 yards but has been more turnover-prone, which could loom large in a tight bowl game.
Georgia Southern counters with JC French IV, who has been the clear leader under center. He’s thrown for 2,753 yards with 19 touchdowns and has shown the ability to take over games when needed. Weston Bryan has seen limited action and serves mostly as depth.
Georgia Southern Eagles vs. Appalachian State Mountaineers bottom line: familiar foes, leaky defenses, and two quarterbacks who won’t hesitate to throw it around — expect points, momentum swings, and Sun Belt weirdness right up to the final whistle.
Georgia Southern Eagles vs. Appalachian State Mountaineers Football Betting Trends
- The Eagles have gone 23-4 straight up as favorites in their last 27 games.
- In their last 5 games as favorites, Georgia Southern is 5-0 against the spread.
- The Eagles have hit the over in their last 4 games as favorites.
- Also, the Mountaineers have a 23-7 straight up record in their last 30 home games.
- In their last 18 games as underdogs, Appalachian State is 11-7 against the spread.
- Additionally, the Mountaineers have won 20 of their last 29 games straight up after a loss.
Eagles Mountaineers Free Pick: Georgia Southern -2.5
Here is my Eagles Mountaineers free pick: Georgia Southern has been extremely comfortable when wearing the favorite tag, winning 23 of the last 27 straight up. Apparently pressure doesn’t bother them.
They’ve also been flawless against the spread in their last five as favorites, which suggests they don’t just win, they finish the job.
Appalachian State has a respectable home reputation, but that shine fades a bit when they’re catching points. An 11-7 ATS mark as underdogs is fine, not exactly intimidating. The bigger concern is defense.
Appalachian State sits near the bottom nationally in points allowed, which is not ideal against a team that likes to score.
Georgia Southern has leaned into offense lately, hitting the over in four straight games as favorites. Because they stay aggressive, games tend to open up quickly.
Bad defenses and confident favorites usually don’t mix well.
The Mountaineers can compete, but asking them to tighten things up defensively feels optimistic.
Georgia Southern doesn’t need perfection here. A few sustained drives and one defensive stop can separate things.
At the end of the day, this number feels short given the matchup dynamics. The favorite brings fewer questions. I’m laying the points with Georgia Southern and trusting the trend to hold. Eagles -2.5 gets the nod.
