Bulldogs vs. Spartans Gameday
Fresno State heads to San Jose Saturday night for another chapter of the Valley Trophy rivalry. The Bulldogs enter 1-1 after losing 39-0 at USC and pounding Sacramento State 49-3, while San Jose State is 2-1 after beating Eastern Michigan and Cal Poly following its opening loss at USC. FS1 has the 11:00 PM ET kickoff from CEFCU Stadium.
The Bulldogs looked like two completely different offenses in their first two games. USC shut them out in Los Angeles before Fresno responded with 49 points and 514 yards against Sacramento State.
Going from zero to 49 points is certainly one way to make everyone forget the opener.
San Jose State has been steadier. The Spartans scored 26 at USC, 27 at Eastern Michigan and 30 against Cal Poly, with Luke Weaver giving Ken Niumatalolo’s offense a legitimate passing threat.
There’s also a little extra juice attached to the Valley Trophy this time. Fresno State moved into the Pac-12 this season while San Jose State remains in the Mountain West, and the programs aren’t scheduled to meet again until 2029.

Fresno State Bulldogs vs. San Jose State Spartans Odds & Last 5
Fresno State enters as the road favorite, with the Bulldogs currently laying 6.5 points and sitting around -250 on the moneyline. San Jose State is returning approximately +210, with the total at 50.5.
There has already been meaningful movement. Fresno State opened -7.5 before dropping to -6.5, while the total has fallen from an opener around 52.5 to 50.5. Apparently 39-0 at USC left at least a few bettors unwilling to pay full retail for Fresno.
The Bulldogs responded emphatically by beating Sacramento State 49-3, while San Jose State has won two straight since its 42-26 loss at USC. The Spartans followed with a 27-21 road win at Eastern Michigan and a 30-20 victory over Cal Poly.
Fresno State has owned the recent rivalry.
The Bulldogs won 41-14 at CEFCU Stadium last November and have taken four of the past five meetings. Three of those five games stayed below Saturday’s 50.5 total, although last year’s matchup reached 55.
Spartans Stats
San Jose State has produced 1,282 yards through three games, with its passing attack doing most of the damage. Luke Weaver has completed 66 of 105 passes for 788 yards, eight touchdowns and only one interception.
Jabari Bates gives the offense some badly needed balance. He’s rushed for 319 yards, including 119 at Eastern Michigan and 163 against Cal Poly, despite still looking for his first rushing touchdown of the season.
Eight touchdown passes and one interception is a pretty tidy way for Weaver to introduce himself.
The receiving production has been spread around. Cooper Hoch has 216 yards and three touchdowns, Carson Clark has 213 yards and two scores, and four other Spartans have already caught touchdown passes.
San Jose State has scored at least 26 points in every game, including against USC. The Spartans have also generated enough explosive plays to keep defenses from simply crowding the box against Bates.
Defensively, there’s still work to do after allowing 83 points through three games. SJSU has created turnovers and pressure, but opponents have consistently found scoring opportunities, which isn’t a terrible recipe when we’re staring at a total barely above 50.
Bulldogs Stats
Fresno State’s season statistics require a little context because the first two games couldn’t have been more different. The Bulldogs were shut out by USC before exploding for 49 points against Sacramento State one week later.
Jayden Mandal has completed 30 of 41 passes for 393 yards, two touchdowns and one interception. His 73.2% completion rate has been encouraging, particularly after Fresno’s offense couldn’t generate anything resembling momentum in Los Angeles.
Bryson Donelson has supplied the best production on the ground.
Donelson has rushed for 117 yards and three touchdowns, while Ezekiel Avit leads Fresno State with 109 receiving yards and a score. The Bulldogs also got contributions throughout the lineup against Sacramento State once the game broke open.
The defense rebounded just as dramatically. Fresno allowed 39 points and 530 total yards at USC before holding Sacramento State to three points and 199 yards.
Now comes the useful middle ground. San Jose State isn’t USC, but Weaver and Bates give the Spartans considerably more offensive credibility than Sacramento State provided, making Saturday a much better test of where Fresno’s defense actually stands.

Bulldogs vs. Spartans QB Matchup
Luke Weaver has wasted little time establishing himself in the San Jose State offense. The Hawaii transfer has thrown eight touchdown passes through three games while completing 62.9% of his attempts and averaging better than 260 passing yards per game.
He’s also taken care of the football.
Weaver has thrown only one interception in 105 attempts, and his production hasn’t depended on beating up one soft opponent. He threw multiple touchdown passes against USC, Eastern Michigan and Cal Poly, giving Fresno State a quarterback it can’t expect to simply rattle into mistakes.
Mandal doesn’t need 49 points again, but another zero would make Over bettors rather cranky.
Jayden Mandal enters with a much smaller statistical sample after two games. He’s completed better than 73% of his passes, but nearly all of Fresno State’s offensive production came during last week’s blowout of Sacramento State.
That’s what makes this matchup useful. Mandal gets a defense that has surrendered at least 20 points in every game, while Weaver faces a Fresno unit that has already experienced both ends of the defensive spectrum.
Fresno State Bulldogs vs. San Jose State Spartans bottom line: Weaver has made the Spartans dangerous enough to contribute at home, while Fresno State’s 49-point response last week gives this rivalry considerably more scoring potential than its ugly USC opener suggested.

Luke Weaver gives the Spartans a legitimate passing threat, and Jabari Bates has topped 100 rushing yards in consecutive games. That balance matters against a Fresno State defense that surrendered 39 points at USC. San Jose State shouldn’t need Fresno’s permission to contribute here.
The Spartans have enough offense to make 50.5 uncomfortable for Under bettors.
Fresno State’s side is less certain, but Jayden Mandal completed better than 73% of his passes through two games. Bryson Donelson gives the Bulldogs a productive option on the ground. Sacramento State was obviously a softer landing, but 49 points still beats another afternoon of staring at zero.
Last year’s meeting finished 41-14, and this San Jose State offense looks considerably more dangerous than that version.
The Spartans have scored 83 points through three games and Fresno has enough weapons to answer.
We don’t need another 55-point rivalry game, although I won’t complain if we get one.
