There are lots of great games in the first couple of weeks of the season. This is not one of them but sometimes Week 0 is just too tempting.
Fresno State is moving to the new PAC 12 next season and hoping that they can be relevant in the Mountain West this year. They are not usually bad, but not nearly as plucky as they were in the Pat Hill days.
Kansas is very well coached by Lance Leipold and is hoping to surprise in a very competitive Big 12. Starting the season at home can help too.
This is a game between two FBS teams at least, and that is going to grab enough attention that the hook on 14 might be meaningful.
I have not seen anyone in the market saying they think Fresno State is going to win.
The total is probably the best play on the board here. Or to ML parlay Kansas with an an earlier Big 12 tilt.
Fresno State Bulldogs
There have been a lot of successful coaches at Fresno State but I am not sure any have come with a better resume than Matt Entz, who was a DC and head coach over the last decade at multi time champion North Dakota State.
Those teams dominate with talent and fundamentals so look for the Bulldogs to try and do the latter at least. In a Week 0 scenario that might help them keep things close.
At the very least, the Jayhawks won’t truly know what to expect and maybe the Bulldogs can win the first quarter and keep this one close from there on out.

The Fresno State Bulldogs finished the 2024 football season with a 6-7 overall record and a 4-3 record in Mountain West Conference play, which placed them fourth in the conference. The Bulldogs’ season ended with a loss in the Famous Idaho Potato Bowl to Northern Illinois, 28-20. They averaged 26.1 points per game while giving up 24.8 points per game to opponents.
Quarterback Mikey Keene was the offensive leader for the Bulldogs, completing 70.5% of his passes for 2,892 yards and 18 touchdowns. He was also a leading rusher for the team, although his stats in that category were impacted by sacks, finishing with -194 yards on 47 attempts. It is that success that made him a prize transer, he is now at Michigan.
It is hard to keep talent at a place like this anymore, most of their top playmakers and defenders graduated or transferred.
Kansas Jayhawks
Kansas won five games last season. I am not sure what their ceiling really was but when you lose your top QB things get a lot harder, really fast.
Fortunately, Jalon Daniels returns and as one of the top dual threats in the college game, he can be a difference maker regardless of the opponent. He has proven that in the past.
The Kansas defense is not returning anyone nearly as significant. That will hurt them in conference play, but they should be fine on Saturday.
Kansas Jayhawks Stats
The Kansas Jayhawks last season with a 5-7 overall record and a 4-5 record in the Big 12 conference. The Jayhawks averaged 29.7 points per game, which ranked them 52nd nationally, while giving up 26.0 points per game to opponents.
On the offensive side of the ball, the Jayhawks will be led by quarterback Jalon Daniels, who threw for 2,454 yards and 14 touchdowns. The running game was a major strength for Kansas, with running back Devin Neal who rushed for 1,266 yards and an impressive 16 touchdowns, averaging 5.8 yards per carry. Unfortunately he is now in the NFL.
Defensively, the Jayhawks’ efforts were highlighted by linebacker JB Brown, who led the team with 73 total tackles, including 52 solo tackles. They are looking to replace him too and find consistency where they can.

Additionally, the Jayhawks have the firepower to put up 35+ on their own. Fresno State’s offensive line might struggle early, yet Kansas’ defense isn’t the type to completely shut them down. As a result, even with new pieces, the Bulldogs should contribute to the scoreboard.
Ultimately, this matchup may not feature clean football, but it has all the ingredients for a track meet.
With Kansas pushing the pace and Fresno State trying to keep up, the Over 58.5 looks like the right side.
