Halloween is approaching, and it means we’ll receive another chapter in one of the SEC’s most storied rivalries.
The Florida Gators and the Georgia Bulldogs will face off in Jacksonville at EverBank Field for their annual meeting this Saturday on CBS. Georgia will open as the massive 22-point favorites, with the total opening at 57.
HISTORY: The Florida/Georgia game has been a marquee matchup for SEC for over 100 years. Formerly dubbed the ‘World’s Largest Cocktail Party’, this will mark the 101st meeting between these two southern schools. Georgia leads the all-time series 54-44-2, after winning four of the last five machups.
Florida Gators
Florida picked up qualities non-conference wins over top-ten ranked Utah and in-state foe South Florida, but they’ve dropped their first two SEC games to Kentucky and Tennessee. The offense has improved swiftly over the passed two games, so there’s optimism for the Gators going forward.
In Week 7, Florida lost to LSU at home, 45-35, dropping to 2-4 against the spread this season.
Florida scores 31.4 points per game, while allowing 28.1 ppg.
Anthony Richardson’s development as a passer may have Gators fan alarmed heading into this one. His performance in Knoxville was great, going for a career-high 453 passing yards, but his inability to push the ball down the field has hindered the offense over the past two weeks. Richardson remains a legit ground threat, especially posting his first 100-yard game of the season, but he’ll need to pull it off with his arm if Florida wants any shot here.
RIchardson has passed for 1,367 yards with six touchdowns to six interceptions, while rushing for 395 yards and six scores through seven starts.
Trevor Etienne and Montrell Johnson Jr. have split the touches for the Gators. Johnson scored twice last weekend, and he’s scored in each of the past five games. He leads Florida with 425 rushing yards and seven touchdowns. Etienne got in the endzone versus LSU as well, and he’s rushed for 334 yards and three scores.
Florida has three quality options at receiver this year. Fifth-year senior Justin Shorter has provided explosiveness over the pass four weeks, gaining a career-high 155 yards versus the Vols, and scoring a 71-yard touchdown against LSU. ASU transfer Rickey Pearsall recorded 103 yards and a score against Tennessee, and he scored on a 76-yard reverse in the win over EWU. Highly touted wideout Xzavier Henderson leads the team in receptions (27), and has 252 receiving yards.
Georgia Bulldogs
Georgia has enjoyed another stellar season under Kirby Smart, rolling out to a 7-0 start with their eyes on another pair of trophies. The Bulldogs kicked off 2022 with an assertive win over Oregon, then shutout in-state foe Samford in their home opener.
Georgia’s first trip to Columbia went very well this season, dominating South Carolina in their SEC opener. Things got a little messy in their second trip to Columbia, as Georgia nearly lost to Mizzou before a timely season-saving comeback. The Bulldogs shook back and pounced on another group of Tigers the following Saturday, defeating Auburn by 30, and they celebrated homecoming nicely last time out.
In Week 7, Georgia shut out Vanderbilt, 55-0, covering the blowout 37-point margin to improve to 4-3 against the spread this season.
Georgia scores 41.7 points per game, while allowing 9.1 ppg.
Stetson Bennett continues to do everything right as a college quarterback. He produces, pushes the ball down the field, and most importantly, he protects the football. The senior quarterback went for 368 passing yards in the season opening win over Oregon, and he responded to a rough outing versus Mizzou with two strong efforts at home.
Bennett has thrown for 2,033 passing yards with nine touchdowns to one interception, while adding 5 scores on the ground.
There’s been a collective effort out of the Bulldog backfield this season. There’s no Gurley, Chubb, or Moreno amongst the bunch, but Daijun Edwards and Kenny McIntosh have complimented each other atop the rotation. Edwards has scored in each of the past three games, and he leads UGA with 336 rushing yards and five touchdowns. McIntosh has added 512 all-purpose yards (242 rush, 270 rec) and caught 28 passes.
Georgia’s passing game is powered by their two dominant tight ends, Brock Bowers and Darnell Washington. Bowers brings unexpected electricity to the tight end position, as he scored off of two jets sweeps versus Kent State, including a 75-yard run. Bowers has 28 catches for a team-lead 393 receiving yards. Washington, a 6’7 mismatch, has given teams fits and has 16 catches for 285 yards.
Ladd McConkey has been the most steady threat outside, catching four passes or more in six of seven games, and leading UGA with 29 receptions.

They’ve looked nothing short of dominant, aside from a trap game in Columbia, and they come into this Florida/Georgia matchup ready to make a statement with another SEC classic imminent next week. The Dawgs can’t take their eyes off of the Gators here for Tennessee, so look for them to come out sharp, and keep the momentum going.
Spotting Florida the points may look appealing here, but with their offense leaning so heavy on the run, and Georgia representing the stiffest defense in the nation, they could find themselves in a lot of trouble in Jacksonville. It should be a physical contest, but they just aren’t trustworthy right now, even with the generous margin.
The magic number of 57 can be hit in this one, with Georgia capable of unloading and doing the heavy lifting. Florida’s going to fight, and in their efforts, contribute to the total. Take the over, and don’t shy away from the UGA blowout.
