The Wake Forest Demon Deacons will host one of their Tobacco Road rivals this weekend when the Duke Blue Devils make the trip to Winston-Salem this weekend. The Demon Deacons are off to one of their best starts in school history, and they’ll look to take care of business at home here.
HISTORY: Wake and Duke have met in every season since 1921, and this will mark their 101st meeting. Duke leads the all-time series 58-40-2, but Wake Forest has won the last two meetings.
Wake Forest is favored by 17 points at home here.
Duke Blue Devils
Duke enters on heels of a BYE week and three straight losses. Their 48-0 loss to Virginia a few weeks ago was their worse loss under David Cutcliffe, and there will be a since of urgency this weekend in Winston-Salem.
Gunnar Holmberg could not keep up with UVA’s high octane attack last weekend. The senior quarterback from Wake Forest himself went 20-34 for a season-low 134 passing yards with two interceptions in Charlottesville. He’ll need to up his play if Duke wants to put up a fight this weekend.
Mataeo Durant has been the pulse of the Duke offense. Although they struggled through the air, the senior back gained 82 rushing yards and caught five passes.
The Demon Deacons struggled to defend the run against Army last weekend, and Durant could give them trouble Saturday. He’s up to 870 rushing yards with 10 total touchdowns on the season.
Jake Bobo has been the team’s most consistent receiver. The senior wideout leads the team with 49 catches and 559 receiving yards. Jalon Calhoun presents a deep threat on the outside, and he’s second on the team in catches (35) and yards (481), while leading the team with two touchdown catches.
Wake Forest Demon Deacons
Wake Forest has jumped out to a 7-0 start behind one of the most methodical offenses in the country. The Demon Deacons found themselves in an unexpected shoot out with Army last weekend, and just seven days after the Black Knights nearly defeated Wisconsin on the road, they came close to handing Wake their first blemish.
Wake took a seven-point lead into the locker room, and the two schools traded scores until late in the fourth quarter, when the Demon Deacons would pull away for the 70-56 win.
Sam Hartman is coming off of the most productive outing of his career. The experienced redshirt sophomore went 23-29 for a career-high 458 passing yards with five touchdowns to no interceptions, while scoring for the third game in a row on the ground.
Hartman is up to 2,067 passing yards with 19 touchdowns to just three interceptions, and four rushing scores on the season.
Wake got a nice effort from their trio in the backfield last weekend. Christian Beal-Smith, Justice Ellison, and Christian Turner all found the end zone against Army, and they give the Demon Deacons a balanced attack. Beal-Smith leads the team with 446 rushing yards and six touchdowns this season.
The Demon Deacons have a pair of studs on the outside in Jaquarii Roberson and A.T. Perry. Both wideouts surpassed 100 yards and scored touchdown in the win over Army. Roberson caught three scores, and he leads the team in catches (39) and yards (672), while Perry leads the team with eight touchdowns.
Free Week 9 NCAA Football Pick
Wake Forest is on the brink of it’s first CFB playoff appearance, but even with trips to Chapel Hill and Clemson looming, the Demon Deacons can’t let the foot off the gas here.
4* Free Week 9 NCAA Betting Pick: Wake -16.5
Despite the Tobacco Road element, Wake should cover another manageable spread this weekend. Dave Clawson’s offense is firing on all cylinders, while the Blue Devils have struggled immensely to move the back during this three-game skid.
Take the Demon Deacons spread confidently.
