The Connecticut Huskies will travel out west and take on the Fresno State Bulldogs to open their season.
The pandemic altered the state of both programs last season, and they will both be eager to get back on the field.
Connecticut Huskies
The 2021 season will mark a new beginning for the Connecticut Huskies in a lot of different ways. After missing the entire 2020 season due to the pandemic, UConn will leave the AAC and return as an Independent school.
This will allow for a mosh pit of matchups, kind of like their season opener.
The Huskies struggled prior to the pandemic, posting a combined 3-21 record in 2018 and 2019. Head coach Randy Edsall will return for his fourth season.
After a year off, it’s possible that progress has been made, but it’s certain that there’s rust. UConn will need to find a direction fast, and opening on the other side of the country is a recipe for disaster.
Edsall hasn’t named a starter at quarterback yet, and it will come to sophomore’s Jack Zergiotis and Steven Krajewski. Zergiotis started ten games as a freshman, passing for 1,782 yards and nine scores with 11 interceptions.
Krajewski saw the field in four games and threw for 292 yards and three touchdowns to two picks.
On the bright side, leading rusher Kevin Mensah is returning. The senior running back has posted a pair of 1,000 seasons and should be a focal point of the offense. Sophomore Cameron Ross also returns after leading the team in receiving during 2019 with 60 catches and 723 yards.
The Huskies really struggled on the defensive end in 2019, giving up a whopping 40.3 points per game.
Fresno State Bulldogs
Fresno State will look to kick off their 2021 season with a very manageable home win. Head coach Kalen DeBoer posted a 3-3 record in his first year at the helm, including a three-game win streak prior to postponements.
The Bulldogs ranked first in the Mountain West in total offense, and impressively ranked fifth in the country in passing. DeBeor’s air attack will be led by quarterback Jake Haener. The UW transfer came and lit it up, tossing for 2,021 passing yards and 14 touchdowns in just five games.
He should be one of the best returning signal callers in the nation.
Fresno will get all of their key weapons back, including their top-five pass catchers. Junior wideout Cropper led the team with 37 receptions, 520 yards, and five scores. Senior running back Ronnie Rivers returns after leading the team in rushing with 507 yards and seven touchdowns.
All of Fresno’s games were shootout’s due to their inability to get stops on third downs, and they gave up 30.2 points per game.
Look for them to try and play quickly, really pushing Appalachian State out of their comfort zone.
