Buffaloes vs. Wildcats Gameday
Colorado heads back on the road Saturday night for a Week 3 date with Northwestern at Martin Stadium in Evanston. The Buffaloes arrive 2-0 after beating Georgia Tech 14-13 and Weber State 52-21, while Northwestern is 1-0 after opening with a 34-18 victory over South Dakota State and then taking a bye. FOX has the 7:30 PM ET broadcast.
Deion Sanders’ Buffaloes found two very different ways to win those games. Colorado survived a defensive fight in Atlanta before Julian Lewis and the offense exploded for 52 points in Boulder last Saturday.
Colorado went from scoring 14 to 52, which is one way to make early averages fairly useless.
Northwestern has been waiting two weeks for another shot after producing 497 yards in its opener. Aidan Chiles threw for 273 yards, and the Wildcats piled up another 224 on the ground.
There’s a little history attached to the setting, too. This will be Northwestern’s final game at Martin Stadium before the program moves into New Ryan Field.

Colorado Buffaloes vs. Northwestern Wildcats Odds & Last 5
Northwestern enters as the betting favorite, with the Wildcats generally laying 3.5 points and sitting around -175 to -180 on the moneyline. Colorado is returning approximately +145 to +155.
The total opened around 48.5, although some sportsbooks have moved down to 47.5. That’s worth watching after these teams combined to score 86 points in their most recent games.
Colorado’s 2-0 start includes a legitimate road win at Georgia Tech, where the Buffaloes entered as underdogs and escaped 14-13. Last week’s 52-21 win over Weber State was considerably less stressful, even if Sanders wasn’t thrilled with everything he saw.
Northwestern gets the home field and the rest advantage.
The Wildcats haven’t played since Sept. 5, when they beat South Dakota State 34-18. Now we’ll find out whether two weeks of preparation is worth more than Colorado’s two weeks of game rhythm.
Wildcats Stats
Northwestern produced 497 yards in its only game, showing considerably more offensive balance than it had for stretches last season. The Wildcats threw for 273 yards and added 224 on the ground against South Dakota State.
Aidan Chiles completed 14 of 24 passes for 273 yards, one touchdown and no interceptions. He also added a rushing touchdown, giving Northwestern another option around the goal line.
Northwestern had 497 yards in its opener, so Chip Kelly apparently didn’t spend the offseason collecting dust.
The running game didn’t depend on one player. Joseph Himon II ran for 87 yards and a touchdown, Gavin Sawchuk added 69, and Caleb Komolafe contributed another 46 as the Wildcats consistently found room.
Griffin Wilde supplied the explosive element with 104 receiving yards on only three catches. Komolafe also caught a touchdown, giving Northwestern several ways to make Colorado defend the entire field.
The Wildcats have also had two weeks to prepare. That’s useful against a Colorado offense that looked considerably more dangerous once Lewis settled into his second college start.
Buffaloes Stats
Colorado has scored 66 points through two games, although 52 of them arrived last Saturday against Weber State. The Buffaloes generated 551 yards in that win after grinding through a much tougher opener at Georgia Tech.
Julian Lewis has completed 31 of 50 passes for 490 yards, five touchdowns and no interceptions this season. His breakout came against Weber State, when the freshman threw four touchdown passes and showed exactly why Colorado was willing to hand him the offense immediately.
Micah Welch has provided balance with 164 rushing yards and two touchdowns. Colorado has also received useful work from Damian Henderson II, preventing the offense from becoming a freshman-quarterback-or-bust operation.
The defense hasn’t been quite as clean as the 2-0 record.
Colorado allowed Weber State to generate 372 total yards last week, including 260 through the air. Giving up that much offense to an FCS opponent isn’t ideal preparation for Chiles and a Northwestern attack that produced nearly 500 yards in its opener.
Still, the Buffaloes have generated six sacks and forced enough disruption to survive both styles of game. That pressure becomes particularly important against a Wildcats offense built around movement, play action and keeping defenders guessing.

Buffaloes vs. Wildcats QB Matchup
Aidan Chiles gets his second start for Northwestern after transferring from Michigan State. His Wildcats debut produced 273 passing yards, a touchdown through the air and another on the ground without an interception.
That’s exactly the clean start Northwestern wanted.
Chiles has always had the physical tools, but limiting mistakes has been the larger question. Chip Kelly’s offense gave him easy throws, movement and a productive running game against South Dakota State, and two weeks of preparation should allow Northwestern to add a few more wrinkles.
Lewis has five touchdown passes without an interception, which is fairly obnoxious work for a freshman.
Julian Lewis enters his first Big Ten road environment after taking a sizable jump forward against Weber State. He has 490 passing yards and five touchdowns through two games without throwing an interception.
The challenge gets considerably tougher here. Northwestern had an entire bye week to study Lewis, while Colorado now asks its freshman quarterback to handle a night road game against a defense specifically preparing to make him uncomfortable.
Colorado Buffaloes vs. Northwestern Wildcats bottom line: Lewis has already shown he can make this Colorado offense dangerous, but Northwestern has had two weeks to prepare its own attack, and neither defense has provided much reason to assume Saturday night stays polite.

The Buffaloes are getting more comfortable with Julian Lewis, and the freshman took a major step forward last week. Colorado also has enough balance with Micah Welch and a deep backfield to keep Northwestern from simply sitting on the passing game. That’s important against a Wildcats defense coming off an extra week of preparation.
Colorado scored 52 last week, which tends to make 48.5 feel considerably less intimidating.
Northwestern has its own reasons to push the pace. Chip Kelly’s offense produced 497 yards against South Dakota State, with Aidan Chiles getting help from a rushing attack that topped 200 yards. Colorado allowed 372 yards to Weber State despite winning by 31.
That last number is where this gets interesting. The Buffaloes can create explosive plays, but they haven’t exactly built a defensive force field through two games. Northwestern should contribute enough at home to keep Colorado attacking.
