The Buffalo Bulls will host the Coastal Carolina Chanticleers this weekend. The Bulls will look to avenge a tough road to Nebraska, while the Chanticleers will look to creep up the rankings a bit higher after a blowout win over Kansas.
HISTORY: These two programs have never crossed paths before. Coastal Carolina is 0-3 all-time against the MAC.
Coastal Carolina Chanticleers
The Coastal Carolina Chanticleers took out the Kansas Jayhawks, and secured a win over a Big 12 team. After a contested first half, the Chanticleers would pull away in the fourth to pick up the 49-22 victory, leading to a pushed spread.
Grayson McCall had another impressive showing last weekend. The redshirt sophomore went 17-21 for 245 passing yards and a pair of touchdowns. McCall also added a score on the ground, and he looks set to lead Coastal to another successful season.
Reese White and Shermari Jones give the Chanticleers the best duo in the Sun Belt. White had another big game against the Jayhawks, gaining 102 rushing yards on 14 carries, and scoring three times. Jones ran for 100 yards and two scores in the opener against the Citadel.
Jaivon Heiligh has gotten off to a strong start as well. After catching six passes for 133 yards against the Bulldogs, the senior wideout posted an identical statline of 6/122/1 against Kansas last weekend. Senior tight end Isaiah Likely continues to be a safe security blanket, and he’s caught five passes in both games.
Coastal Carolina did indeed allow over 400 yards to Kansas, but they got to the quarterback six times, and stopped the Jayhawks on fourth down five times.
Buffalo Bulls
The Buffalo Bulls were tasked with going into Lincoln last weekend as 14-point underdogs. After posting a 6-1 record last season, the bookies didn’t give them much room to work with, and a pair of Nebraska touchdowns in the fourth would lead to a 28-3 defeat.
The Bulls blew out Wagner, and played Nebraska tough on the road, so this matchup will allow us to gain a better assessment of them. Senior quarterback Kyle Vantrease has thrown for 455 passing yards with one touchdown to one interception so far this season.
Senior Kevin Marks Jr. leads a solid group of backs for the Bulls. He’s led the team in rushing for three straight seasons and he’s gained 157 yards on 34 carries through two contests. Junior backs Ron Cook Jr. and Dylan McDuffie have both reached the end zone as well this season.
Buffalo has a run-heavy approach, but EMU transfer Quian Williams has given them a solid threat on the outside so far. After catching five recpetions for 96 yards in the opener versus Wagner, Williams caught eight passes for 93 yards last week at Nebraska. Senior wideout Jovany Ruiz has brought in seven passes for 109 yards and a touchdown.
Despite the 25-point point loss, the Bulls made things tough for the Cornhuskers, even holding them scoreless in the first quarter.
Free Week 3 NCAA Football Pick
This non-conference battle should give Coastal Carolina a solid road contest for their resume, and it could be the Bulls coming out party with an upset over a ranked team at home. Two Group of Five teams with a lot of talent.
4* Free Week 3 NCAA Betting Pick: Coastal Carolina -14
Through two weeks, Coastal Carolina hasn’t given us a reason to sniff out an upset here. They returned most of last year’s squad from what was a groundbreaking season in the midst of a crisis. They hosted College Gameday and beat an undefeated BYU team that featured a top-five pick at quarterback. They were undefeated themselves prior to an overtime loss to Liberty, and they’ve won 16 of their last 17 games.
We won’t overthink the worse here, and we’ll hope to avoid the dreaded 14-point push by rolling with the Chanticleers this Saturday. Take Coastal Carolina’s game spread.
