Another rematch in a conference championship game here. Though there is little doubt the two best teams in the “ACC” are competing.
Notre Dame took the first game at home and with Trevor Lawrence on the sidelines. The odds say they are not going to win this time around.
The bigger question is what an Irish loss does to the playoff rankings. Does a Clemson loss mean they are out?
Clemson Tigers
At times the Tigers have looked like the best team in America. Unfortunately, they have not been able to sustain it. Sometimes they look like a tiger playing with its food.
The injury to Lawrence did not help, though his backup played quite well while he was sidelined. If Lawrence plays against ND the first time do the Tigers win? Maybe.
It’s the defense that has been the bigger conundrum so far. There is no doubt some of those guys will be in the NFL but this group has underwhelmed.
The same goes for RB Travis Etienne. He has more games with under 75 yards rushing than above that this season. Everything about Clemson just feels more sluggish this season.
Despite all the criticism above they are still 10.5 point favourites against an undefeated Notre Dame team on a neutral field. That might be value. If they had won the first one they might have been -14.
Notre Dame Fighting Irish
This definitely looks like Brian’s Kelly’s best shot to win a national championship. He has a team with a lower ceiling than Clemson, Alabama or Ohio State but their floor is super high and they are consistent.
One concern has to be a defense that has been the core of the team all season. They gave up 40 points to Clemson last time and they know they are losing DC Clark Lea, who has accepted the head coaching job at Vanderbilt.
On offense, Ian Book is more than good enough to win with at quarterback. I am not his biggest fan but some of the criticism he receives is because his receivers are not that good. He is the one holding the ball though.
Book has become an active runner and the Irish are going to have to repeat the success they had running the ball in the first matchup. If they can’t this one could be ugly.

A smaller number would be better and you might want to look at a first half line too. I can definitely see a scenario where Clemson roars out of the game, builds a sizable lead and then ND chips away a little. Backdoors at this number are common
