Clemson and North Carolina are firmly eliminated from the College Football Playoff but can cap their seasons with an ACC Title and a respectable bowl game.
The Tigers were always going to be limited in their potential this season with their QB. Still, a 10-2 season is respectable considering Clemson lost both of their coordinators from 2021 to head coaching vacancies. Also, it’s just really hard being good year in and year out. Saban has ruined that expectation.
North Carolina’s season is by far the bigger surprise though. Drake Maye wasn’t even a shoe-in to be the starter this year, but he lit the college football world on fire. Along with Caleb Williams, he will be a favorite for the Heisman trophy in 2023.
Clemson still ranks 43rd in offensive success rate, which is good but not great. They are one of the least explosive offenses this season (104th) and sometimes you just need a little magic to win the close ones. They’ve averaged 33.7 ppg over their last 3.
Their offense lives off of the rushing game, which actually has been quite successful (19th). Will Shipley is among some of the best RB’s from a technical standpoint and QB DJ Uiagalelei is a solid runner.
North Carolina’s defense has been putrid so I expect Clemson to be able to put points up.
We know Drake Maye makes the offense go, so we really need to know if Clemson can stop the passing attack. Most teams haven’t been able to at a high level, but Clemson profiles well. Their defensive passing success rate is top 25 and they force teams into passing downs at the 14th best rate.
North Carolina Tar Heels
The Tar Heels are coming off of consecutive losses in which they were held to 17 and 27 points. In some ways, teams have figured out how to stop Carolina and Clemson likely won’t miss any trends or hints in the film.
On the season as a whole, North Carolina has been one of the more explosive offenses (13th). They’ve also been highly successful passing the ball and moving the chains, so it’s not as if they’re just running 4 verts and hitting the long ones.
Clemson’s trenches have been stout against the run so it’s difficult to see how Carolina will manage much on the ground. Clemson’s secondary is top-20 in havoc generated, so Maye will still have his hands full. Dabo has dealt with explosive wideouts in his many CFP days, so he’ll at least have a plan to stop Josh Downs.
I mentioned the woes of the Carolina defense this season and the numbers aren’t pretty. We know Clemson will run the ball, but the Tar Heels are 115th in defensive rushing success rate. They generate almost no havoc, so without negative plays we can expect Clemson’s offense to put up points.
NCAA Football Handicapping Trends
- Clemson is 16-2 SU in its last 18 games
- Clemson is 7-1 SU in its last 8 games when playing North Carolina
- North Carolina is 6-2 SU in its last 8 games
- The total has gone OVER in 5 of North Carolina’s last 7 games when playing Clemson
4* Free Clemson Tigers vs. North Carolina Tar Heels NCAA Betting Final Analysis:
Clemson has hit the over at a 58% clip this season. North Carolina is 6-6 against the over, but they’ve also scored a touchdown on 39% of drives (18th).
North Carolina is your typical over team: explosive offense with a non-existent defense. They’re 14th in seconds/play so they also like to move fast.
I think this will end up being a fun one. Buckle up buckaroos, we’re taking the over.
