Chippewas vs. Hurricanes Gameday
The Central Michigan Chippewas head to South Florida Saturday to face the No. 6 Miami Hurricanes in their final nonconference game. Kickoff is set for 6:30 PM ET at Hard Rock Stadium on The CW.
Central Michigan enters 2-1 after consecutive home wins over Colgate and Wyoming. The Chippewas opened with a 38-7 loss at New Mexico, rallied past Colgate 13-10 and beat Wyoming 24-10 last Saturday.
The next assignment is a modest step up in class.
CMU won two straight at home, and the reward is a trip to Miami against the nation’s No. 6 team. Very thoughtful.
Miami is 3-0 overall and 2-0 in the ACC after wins over Stanford, Florida A&M and Wake Forest. The Hurricanes opened with a 45-6 road win at Stanford, destroyed FAMU 77-7 and then beat Wake Forest 33-20.
Miami is ranked No. 6 in the AP Poll and No. 5 in the Coaches Poll.

Miami presents a slightly different problem.

Hurricanes Stats
Miami has scored 155 points through three games, averaging better than 51 per Saturday. The Canes have topped 30 points in every game and put 77 on the board in their home opener against Florida A&M.
Darian Mensah has been absurdly efficient.
Mensah has completed 71 of 79 passes for 873 yards, 11 touchdowns and zero interceptions. His 89.9% completion rate leads the FBS, and he opened the Wake Forest game with 24 consecutive completions.
That’s not a typo.
Mark Fletcher Jr. has rushed for 230 yards and three touchdowns, while Malachi Toney leads Miami with 444 receiving yards and five scores. Toney has given Mensah a home-run threat while Fletcher provides the Canes with plenty of balance on the ground.
Mensah has 11 touchdown passes and eight incompletions, which seems unnecessarily rude to opposing secondaries.
Miami’s defense has given up only 33 points through three games. The Canes held Stanford to six, Florida A&M to seven and recorded three sacks in last week’s road win at Wake Forest.
Chippewas Stats
Central Michigan has leaned heavily on the running game, and that identity has become clearer each week. The Chippewas rushed for 339 yards against Wyoming while attempting only 11 passes.
Angel Flores is a quarterback in name, but running him has been CMU’s best offensive weapon.
Flores has rushed for 312 yards and three touchdowns through three games, ranking among the nation’s leading rushing quarterbacks. He went for 122 yards against Colgate and followed with a career-high 163 against Wyoming.
Jayden Clerveaux and Vaughn Blue give the Chippewas additional options in the backfield.
CMU’s defense has allowed 58 points, but 38 came in the opener at New Mexico. The Chippewas held Colgate and Wyoming to 10 apiece while forcing six turnovers across those two wins.
That formula becomes considerably harder to maintain against Miami.
The Canes are the highest-ranked opponent Central Michigan has faced since taking on No. 2 Michigan State in 2015. CMU has also dropped seven straight games against nationally ranked opponents.
Chippewas vs. Hurricanes QB Matchup
Darian Mensah has been about as efficient as a quarterback can be through three games. He’s completed 71 of 79 passes for 873 yards, 11 touchdowns and no interceptions.
His Wake Forest performance got a little silly.
Mensah completed his first 24 attempts and finished 30-of-34 for 220 yards and three touchdowns. Combined with his final 11 completions against FAMU, he completed 35 consecutive passes across two games to set Miami and ACC records.
Angel Flores presents an entirely different challenge.
The Central Michigan starter has only 103 passing yards, but judging him through the air misses the point. Flores has carried 60 times for 312 yards and three touchdowns, including back-to-back 100-yard rushing performances.

CMU has essentially built its offense around Flores’ legs. Against Wyoming, he ran 28 times for 163 yards while completing only four passes.
Miami obviously isn’t operating under the same restrictions.
Mensah can distribute the football to Toney, Fletcher and a deeper collection of weapons without needing to manufacture offense himself. Flores, meanwhile, needs the Chippewas’ option-heavy ground attack to keep moving the chains and keep Miami’s offense watching.
One quarterback wants to throw it everywhere.
The other may be perfectly happy if he barely throws it at all.
Central Michigan Chippewas vs. Miami Hurricanes bottom line: CMU’s unusual run-heavy offense gives Miami something different to prepare for, but Mensah and the Hurricanes bring a massive advantage through the air that leaves the Chippewas very little room for wasted possessions.

The Canes put 77 on Florida A&M and followed that with 33 at Wake Forest. Back home against Central Michigan, Miami has enough offensive firepower to do most of the work on this total itself.
When the favorite is laying more than 40, asking it to carry an over ticket isn’t exactly a radical concept.
CMU’s contribution may come from Angel Flores and the running game. The Chippewas rushed for 339 yards against Wyoming, and Flores has already topped 100 rushing yards in consecutive games.
Miami should create plenty of scoring opportunities. If Central can steal a touchdown or two along the way, 53.5 becomes very reachable.
