It’s the week one of the college football season as teams are gearing up to start this bizarro year.
UAB capped off their 2019 season with a loss in the New Orleans bowl against Appalachain state 31-17. The Blazers finished 9-5 overall going 6-2 against C-USA conference opponents in 2019.
Central Arkansas had on the best years in their program under second-year head coach Nathan Brown. The Bears went 9-4 overall and had a 7-2 record in the Southland conference en route to an appearance in the FCS football playoff. They are actually 1-0 in this early season as the FCS starts a week prior to the FBS schedule.

Junior Quarterback Breylin Smith will try to get to his club to a 2-0 record to start the year after getting the victory the last time out against. The Bears took down Austin Peay in the first game of the College Football season 24-17 after a last-minute touchdown to secure the win.
In the win, Breylin Smith threw for 283 yards in the game and had one touchdown on the night. Senior Kierre Crossley led the team in rushing with 110 yards on the night and had a touchdown to his credit as well.
The defense looked good in the win for the Bears as well as Tamarurian Wilson had an interception for 28 yards helping lead to a touchdown for the offense that gave them the lead in the second half.
UAB Blazers
Blazers fell just short in the C-USA conference last year under the third year of Bill Clark’s reign. They went 6-2 on the year in the conference posting the second-best record but were one game short of winning it all as FAU finished at 7-1.

Junior Tyler Johnston III will have the task of leading his team to a championship game for the conference this year. In 2019, Johnston threw for 2250 yards putting up 17 touchdowns and 15 interceptions in the 11 games he played. Tyler got injured halfway through the season and didn’t look the same when he returned post-injury in 2019 and will try to redeem himself here in 2020.
Junior now Senior Austin Watkins had a team-high 1029 receiving yards in 2019 to go with his six touchdowns on the year. He will try to lead the offense in 2020 as he has had two years to mesh with stating QB Tyler Johnston. Junior Lucious Stanley led the team in touchdowns last season with eight on the year but had the second-most rushing yards on the team with 488 yards.

There is also a lot of continuity on this UAB team as Bill Clark will be returning for his fourth year
