Here’s why I’m backing a California ATS bet below in my Golden Bears Runnin’ Rebels free pick & gambling prediction for this matchup.
Golden Bears vs. Runnin’ Rebels Gameday
California heads to Las Vegas for a Week 5 nonconference matchup with UNLV at Allegiant Stadium. Tosh Lupoi’s Golden Bears are 2-2 and 1-1 in ACC play, while Dan Mullen’s Runnin’ Rebels are 2-2 and 1-0 in the Mountain West.
Kickoff is set for 12:30 PM PT on CBS Sports Network.
Cal is coming off a frustrating home loss to Clemson. UNLV finally returns to Las Vegas after playing its previous three games on the road, closing that stretch with a convincing victory at Akron.
Two 2-2 teams walk into Vegas, and thankfully neither has to explain its September after Saturday.
This is the first time Cal will play UNLV at Allegiant Stadium. The Rebels have already traveled more than 6,000 miles this season, so somebody finally remembered to let them play another one at home.

California Golden Bears vs. UNLV Runnin’ Rebels Odds & Last 5
The opening odds make UNLV a small home favorite. California is +114 on the moneyline, UNLV is -137, and the Runnin’ Rebels are laying 2.5 points.
The opening total is 53.5.
California lost 24-10 to Clemson last week and failed to score an offensive TD.

The most recent meeting came in the 2024 LA Bowl.

Runnin’ Rebels Stats
UNLV badly needed its performance at Akron.
The Rebels fell behind 7-0 before Jackson Arnold connected with Jai’Den Thomas for a 40-yard TD. From there, UNLV took control and shut out the Zips throughout the second half.
Arnold finished with 290 passing yards.
Thomas rushed for 113 yards while also catching two TD’s. Taz Reddicks provided the biggest receiving afternoon with 116 yards, including a 59-yard score.
The balance was the encouraging part for UNLV.
The Rebels finished with 493 total yards, including 203 on the ground. They averaged 7.8 yards per play and put together five offensive scoring drives of at least 62 yards.
UNLV’s defense settled in after Akron’s opening possession.
The Rebels intercepted three passes and held the Zips scoreless after halftime. Mumu Bin-Wahad supplied the exclamation point with a 35-yard pick-six in the fourth quarter.
Golden Bears Stats
California’s defense did most of the scoring against Clemson.
Kamar Mothudi returned a fumble 35 yards for a TD in the first quarter. Isaiah Crosby also intercepted a pass as the Bears continued finding ways to create takeaways.
The offense had a much rougher evening.
Cal finished with 231 total yards, converted only 3 of 12 third downs and failed on both fourth-down attempts. Adam Mohammed managed 51 rushing yards as Clemson repeatedly kept the Bears behind schedule.
The defense eventually cracked against the run.
Clemson finished with 257 rushing yards, with a 75-yard TD providing the final blow. Cal needs a much better answer against Thomas and a UNLV ground game that found plenty of room last week.
Cal’s defense keeps creating chances; the offense occasionally acts like accepting them would violate team policy.
Special teams also contributed to the loss.
A 65-yard punt-return TD broke a 10-10 tie late in the third quarter. Giving away points like that in a game lined inside a FG is a fairly creative way to make life unnecessarily difficult.
Golden Bears vs. Runnin’ Rebels QB Matchup
Jackson Arnold has settled in nicely at UNLV.
The Runnin’ Rebels QB has thrown for 891 yards with 5 TD’s and no interceptions through four games. His ball security has helped UNLV avoid giving opponents many easy possessions.
Jaron-Keawe Sagapolutele has had a bumpier start.
The Cal QB has thrown for 985 yards with 7 TD’s and 4 interceptions. Two of those picks came against Clemson, when he completed 16 of 29 passes for 119 yards.

“ Anybody can post a prediction. CappersPicks backs up its sports picks with opinionated matchup analysis, experienced handicappers & documented betting performance. Pad that bankroll one day at a time! ”
The matchup presents a pretty clear contrast.
Arnold has been the more careful QB, and UNLV has enough balance around him that he doesn’t need to force throws to keep the offense moving. Cal has to disrupt that comfort without creating easy rushing lanes behind the pressure.
Sagapolutele has the bigger bounce-back assignment.
He doesn’t need to spend Saturday trying to erase the Clemson game with one throw. If Cal can keep him in manageable situations and involve Mohammed underneath, the Bears should have a better chance to sustain possessions and keep this game attached into the fourth quarter.
California Golden Bears vs. UNLV Runnin’ Rebels bottom line: UNLV brings the cleaner QB play, but California has enough defensive disruption and offensive upside to keep this from becoming comfortable.

Golden Bears Runnin’ Rebels Free Pick: Cal +2.5
Here is my Golden Bears Runnin’ Rebels free pick: I’m taking California +2.5. The Clemson game was ugly enough that Cal should probably delete the film and claim the DVR malfunctioned, but one bad offensive night doesn’t make UNLV an automatic favorite I want to lay points with.
The Bears have already won away from Berkeley, and their defense has been opportunistic. The challenge is different here because Arnold hasn’t thrown an interception, so Cal needs pressure and disciplined coverage rather than sitting around waiting for him to suddenly start handing out gifts.
UNLV looked terrific against Akron, but I’m not laying points because somebody beat up the Zips.
The bigger swing belongs to Sagapolutele. Cal doesn’t need him chasing explosives after every snap. Get Mohammed involved, stay out of obvious passing downs and make UNLV defend complete drives instead of feeding the Rebels short fields.
At +2.5, I’m essentially betting Cal can turn this into a fourth-quarter possession game. These teams are both 2-2, and I don’t see enough separation to make the Bears the side giving away the points. Give me Cal +2.5.
