For the 99th time in this storied rivalry, the BYU Cougars (6-5) and Utah Utes (8-3) take part in another Holy War. The Utes hold a 60 – 34 – 4 edge in the series between two programs, and have taken the last 7 meetings.
The BYU Cougars became bowl eligible last weekend after their 45 – 10 win over New Mexico State. The Cougars run of 12-straight bowl appearances came to an end last season after the Cougars finished out 2017 with a 4 – 8 record.
Cougar Head Coach Kalami Sitake has at least gotten the team back to the post-season again, but a 7 – 5 record with a win over Utah would look much better to the bowl committee.
The Utah Utes can approach this year’s Holy War a little differently than normal because an appearance in the Pac-12 Championship game has already been booked.
As important as the rivalry has been and will always be, the Utes can choose to look ahead and not lose any players headed towards a conference title game next weekend.
The Cougars 6 – 5 record has seen 3 of their losses decided by a combined 9 points the season, While the defense has certainly done their part to keep the Cougars in most of their games, the offense has sputtered all season long.
Tanner Mangum just found his way back to the field last weekend, after being on the sidelines since October 5 in the 45 – 20 loss to Utah State. Mangum completed 1 of 3 passes for 21 yards and threw one INT.
Freshmen QB Zach Wilson has come into his own running the Cougs offense, and he has only thrown 2 interceptions in 7 appearances this year. Wilson’s ability to get his legs involved has added 125 yards and 2 scores on the ground to along with his 6 passing TDs.
The running game will possibly be without Squally Canada in this year’s Holy War, which takes 91 carries and 5 TDs off the board should he not be able to go.
Utes Head Coach Kyle Whittingham has made four straight bowl appearances and 11 overall in his first 13 campaigns with Utah. A bowl appearance this year is a formality, and much of that placement will depend on if the Utes can take a Pac-12 Conference Championship.
Amazingly, the Utes have won 24 Conference Championships in five different conferences, but they have yet to add one of those as a Pac-12 team. Utah joined the conference in 2011, and their only division title came in 2015. A loss in the conference title game led to a post-season Holy War against BYU, a game which Utah won 35 – 28 after jumping out to a 35 – 0 lead.
The Utes had to deal with Tanner Mangum on that day, although they might not see much of him this weekend. With the emergence of Zach Wilson, this Utah defense will have to do quick work to pick up on all of his skills.
These two are much different quarterbacks, and Wilson’s ability to break contain will not surprise anyone now.
This line is a bit inflated, considering the Utes cannot afford to lose anyone headed towards the Pac-12 title game next weekend. I would suggest thinking dog and grabbing the double-digit line in a series filled with close games recently.
