BYU and Navy will headline the first Monday Night college football game of the season. This is the first premier matchup we have in college football this season, so it should be a good one in Annapolis.
BYU Cougars
The Cougars finished at 7-6 in back to back years now under fifth-year head coach Kalani Sitake. Sitake will try to improve on that record this and get his first double-digit win season in his career at BYU.
BYU has already had a rough start to the season before it even started as their star tight end, Matt Bushman suffered an Achilles injury in training camp this week and maybe sidelined this entire season. The senior led the team with 678 receiving yards on 47 catches, including four touchdowns.
Junior Zach Wilson will behind the helm for the Cougars at QB. In his Sophomore year, Wilson completed 62.4 percent of his 319 attempts for 2,382 yards last season. He had a 1.22 TD to INT ratio last season throwing 11 TD’s and nine interceptions which isn’t great, but he also wasn’t the full-time starter as BYU tried out three different options at QB last year. Jaren Hall and Baylor Romney also appeared in games last season, so don’t be surprised if you see them come in as they are still on the team.
Sitake’s squad should be strong defensively, as 14 of his top 16 tacklers are returning this season. Redshirt-senior linebacker Kavika Fonua led the team in tackles with 83 last year and had two interceptions as well.
Navy Midshipmen
Navy had an amazing bounce-back season in 2019 going 11-2 after going 3-10 in 2018. Ken Niumatalolo will return for his 13th season as head coach of the Midshipmen and is in search of his 11th winning season under his control.
2020 will be a tough task for Niumatalolo though as he is going to have to replace his star QB from last season Malcolm Perry. Perry accounted for more than half of all the rushing yards Navy accumulated last season and that kind of production will be very hard to just replace. Perry also threw for more than 1000 yards and beat a Power 5 team in Kansas State last season in AutoZone Liberty Bowl.

Perry Olson will be handed the keys to the offense this season for coach Niumatalolo. In his Freshman season, he completed only 2 of 8 passes in the triple option and carried the ball 34 times for 80 yards. A good thing for the offense though is that WR Mychal Cooper is returning and as well as FB Jamale Cothers who was the team’s second-leading rusher.

- The total has gone UNDER in 4 of Brigham Young’s last 6 games against an opponent in the American Athletic Conference conference.

- Navy is 7-0 SU in their last 7 games at home.
Free Week 1 NCAA Football Prediction:
I like BYU here as they have more continuity on the offensive side of the ball. The triple-option isn’t something you learn overnight and I think QB Perry Olson is going to struggle here in his first game. He hasn’t had the practice in real game situations because of COVID and that is going to really affect his play.
