HISTORY: Boise and BYU first crossed paths as Mountain West rivals, and they’ve now faced off in every season since 2012. The Broncos lead the all-time series, but the Cougars won the last meeting on the blue turf, 51-17.
BYU Cougars
BYU is in the midst of a brewing storm, and they’ve got to make a stand here. The Cougars opened the season with wins over USF and Baylor, but a road trip to the Zoo put a blemish the first blemish on their record. After losing to Oregon, the Cougs responded with a pair of rivalry wins over Wyoming and Utah State, then things began to trend south.
A trip to South Bend to face their big brother’s at Notre Dame didn’t go well, and while they respectfully competed, it’s the spiral from that matchup that’s been alarming. BYU ill-advisedly hosted Arkansas for homecoming and got lit up for 52 points from SEC power. The Cougars then took a trip to Lynchburg to for another Christian-based battle with Liberty, and dropped their third straight game. A return to Provo was suppose to do the trick last Friday, but the visitors had other plans.
In Week 8, BYU lost to ECU, 27-24, failing to cover for the seventh week in a row.
BYU scores 29.4 points per game, while allowing 31.2 ppg.
The pressure of playing in these big, meaningful road games has gotten to Jaren Hall each time this season. It happened in South Bend, and just after going for a season-high 356 yards versus Arkansas, it happened again in Lynchburg in Week 8. It may take a standout performance to stop Boise’s momentum here.
Hall’s thrown for 2,245 passing yards with 21 touchdowns to three interceptions on the season.
Christopher Brooks has handled the lead role after coming over from Cal through the transfer portal, but fifth-year senior Lopini Katoa took the wheel last weekend. The veteran back broke out for a season-high 116 yards and a touchdown versus ECU, and he may have the lead role again versus Boise. Brooks is leading BYU with 459 rushing yards and five touchdowns.
BYU has a pretty good receiving core, especially when Puka Nacua is healthy. Nacua is one of more versatile and explosive players in the country, and his presence helped BYU keep up with Arkansas. The hometown wideout caught eight passes for 141 yards and scored three times (1 rec, 2 rush). Nacua picked up 114 yards against Liberty, and he now has 26 receptions for 382 receiving yards, 156 rushing yards and seven touchdowns.
Kody Epps and Keanu Hill have been Hall’s favorite targets this season. Epps has started to come alive over the past six weeks, scoring in the five games prior to last weekend, and surpassing the 100-yard mark in each of the past two games. Epps leads BYU in receptions (39), receiving yards (459), and six touchdowns. Hill has caught four passes or more in four games this season, and he’s second on the team with 22 catches, 399 yards, and four touchdowns.
Boise State Broncos
Boise State delivered mixed results during the first four weeks of the season, but they’ve turned things around since the start of Mountain West play. After defeating New Mexico in Week 2, Boise has taken out San Diego State, Fresno State, and Air Force, covering in each contest. The Broncos kept the party going last weekend on the blue turf for homecoming.
In Week 5, Boise State blew out Colorado State, 49-19, improving to 5-3 ATS this season.
Boise State scores 28.9 points per game, while allowing 17.3 points per game.
Boise moved on from Hank Bachmeier after three years of serviceable play, and handed true freshman Taylen Lewis the keys to the offense. Thr 6’6 quarterback has broought more of a dual-threat ability to the position, and he’s starting to thrive through the air. Boise experimented with Lewis last week, and he posted career-highs in completions, attempts, and yardage with 306.
Green has passed for 842 yards with four touchdowns to four interceptions, and he’s rushed for 258 yards and five more scores.
George Holani heads the backfield for Boise. The junior back brings a versatile skill set to the table, gaining 75 yards or more in each of the past five games. Holani posted a career-high of 157 yards versus Fresno, and he returned and scored three touchdowns in the win over Colorado State.
Holani led the squad in rushing way back in 2019, and he’s up to 657 rushing yards, with 18 catches and nine total touchdowns (6 rush, 3 rec) for the season.
No one’s been able to replace the void left by Khalif Shakur at wideout thus far. Stefan Cobbs has been the most reliable target, and he’s got 22 catches for a team-leading 256 receiving yards and two touchdowns through eight games.

Free Week 10 NCAA Football Final Analysis:
BYU will head the blue turf with one thing on their side: they will indeed represent the toughest team Boise has faced until this point, so there’s hope. The Broncos have really got things going since the start of Mountain West play, but how well they stack up to the Cougars remains to be seen.
This is a lot of points to hand a team that needs to stop the bleeding, and as appealing as that looks, the magic number feels attainable. Boise bottling up BYU like they’ve been able to do with teams in conference play, so their going to have to score here.
The Cougs have found themselves in high scoring affairs, with six of their nine contests surpassing this number. This former Mountain West battle has a lot of upset potential, but the visitors can’t be trusted right now. Take the over for this one.
