The Tennessee Volunteers will host the Bowling Green Falcons to open the 2021 season. Both teams are coming off of season that were below school standards. HISTORY: Tennessee defeated Bowling Green at home in 2015, 59-30.
Bowling Green finished last in the MAC last year after going 0-5. They only scored more than 20 points once, and they lost each game by double figures. Head coach Scot Loeffler will enter his third season in charge, and he’s posted a 3-14 record so far.
Redshirt junior Matt McDonald started five games last season, and didn’t yield the best results. He only threw for 712 yards with one touchdown to six interceptions.
Bowling Green Falcons
Terion Stewart led the team in rushing as a freshman with 295 yards and four scores in the final three games of the season. He should be the focal point of the Falcon offense. Bowling Green lost their three leading pass catchers from last year, leaving Javonte Kinsey as the only returning player with more than one reception.
The Falcons struggled defensively, giving up a massive 45 points per game during 2020.
Tennessee Volunteers
Tennessee opted out of the 2020 season due to the COVID-19 pandemic. The Volunteers finished third in the Ohio Valley Conference with a 5-7 record in 2019. Josh Heupel will lead the Vols into a new regime this season.
Heupel, a former Walter Camp Award winner and BCS national champion, thrived in his first head coaching role at UCF, posting a 27-6 record in three years. Heupel will have three options to deploy at quarterback, and depending on the game flow, we may see all three.
Joe Milton III has been slated to start after throwing for 1077 passing yards at Michigan in 2020. Sophomore Harrison Bailey is the incumbent starter, and he threw for 578 yards in his first year in Knoxville.
Hendon Hooker crossed the Bristol border over from Virginia Tech, and the senior quarterback brings a dual-threat skill set to the table.
Eric Gray and Ty Chandler combined for over 1,100 rushing yards last season, but both have moved on from the program, leaving a hole in the backfield. Jabari Small could be in for the bulk of the workload after rushing for 117 yards on 26 carries last season. Velus Jones Jr. should see more targets this season after Josh Palmer’s departure.
The dynamic wideout only caught 22 passes for 280 receiving yards during his first season over from USC. Jalin Hyatt posted identical numbers of 20 catches and 276 yards during his season. Tennessee gave up 30.1 points per game in 2020.
NCAA Football Handicapping Trends

Free Week 1 NCAA Football Pick
This is good spot for Josh Heupel and Tennessee to remind to bring the new era in. It’s been four+ years, but the Vols should have much more of a direction this season.
4* Free Week 1 NCAA Betting Pick: Tennessee -35.5
A lot of eyes will be on Tennessee this season, as they look to become a prominent school in the south once again. A see of orange should overwhelm a visiting, inexperienced Bowling Green team.
Prior to Pruitt stint’s at the helm, the opening weekend at Neyland normally delivered a blow out. Look for the Vols to open up Heupel’s with a big win here. Bet on Tennessee covering the giant -35.5 spread.
