Eagles vs. Mustangs Gameday
Boston College heads to Dallas for an ACC matchup with No. 21 SMU on Saturday afternoon at Gerald J. Ford Stadium. The Eagles enter at 2-2 and 0-1 in conference play, while the Mustangs are 3-1 overall and 1-1 in the ACC.
Both teams come in off very different Week 4 games.
BC battled through miserable wind and rain before falling 21-14 to Virginia Tech. SMU had no such trouble moving the football against Missouri State, piling up 592 yards in a 34-24 home win.
Boston College wants to make this ugly, but SMU has enough offensive firepower to ruin that plan quickly.
The Eagles are also still looking for their first road win after opening the season with a loss at Cincinnati. SMU is 2-0 at Ford Stadium and now gets its first ACC home game of the season.
SMU gets the home field and the ranking, but Boston College has already shown it can make opponents work when the Eagles control the pace. The question is how long BC can play that kind of game against this offense.

Boston College Eagles vs. SMU Mustangs Odds & Last 5
The opening odds make SMU a massive home favorite. The Mustangs are -1716 on the moneyline, Boston College is +948, and SMU is laying 21 points.
The total is 55.5, which puts plenty of responsibility on the favorite to do some scoring.
Boston College hasn’t shown the same scoring ceiling. The Eagles managed 14 points against Virginia Tech last week, and their offense has been much more comfortable grinding through possessions than trying to win a shootout.
SMU has been considerably more explosive.
The Mustangs have scored at least 27 points in every game and topped 30 three times. Their lone loss came in a 41-31 shootout at Louisville before they bounced back against Missouri State.
The recent series has belonged to SMU as well. The Mustangs won 45-13 last season after beating Boston College 38-28 in Dallas in 2024, putting plenty of points on the board in both meetings.

Mustangs Stats
SMU has been one of the most productive offenses in the country through four games. The Mustangs are averaging more than 540 yards per game, with nearly 385 of those coming through the air.
Last week was another reminder of how quickly this offense can pile up yardage.
SMU finished with 592 total yards against Missouri State, including 464 through the air. Yamir Knight caught 11 passes for 164 yards, while Jalen Cooper added 125 receiving yards as the Mustangs repeatedly found room downfield.
Kendrick Raphael gives the offense some balance. He has rushed for 373 yards and 5 TD’s this season, including 98 yards and a score last week.
The defense can create problems of its own.
SMU recorded a season-high 11 tackles for loss and 7 sacks against Missouri State. The Mustangs also held the Bears to 4-of-16 on third down, continuing an excellent start in that area.
Eagles Stats
BC has had to grind for most of its offense, and last week’s weather didn’t make life any easier.
The Eagles managed 250 total yards against Virginia Tech. The running game accounted for 139 yards, with Mason McKenzie doing nearly all of that damage.
Evan Dickens gives Boston College another option in the backfield.
Dickens rushed for 102 yards and a TD against Maine the previous week, and he has shown he can contribute as a receiver as well. BC will need that versatility if SMU starts forcing the Eagles to chase points.
The defense kept BC alive for most of last Saturday.
Virginia Tech didn’t score a TD until the fourth quarter. BC actually carried a 14-6 lead into the final period, but two late Hokies TD’s flipped the game.
Boston College can shorten this game for a while, but chasing SMU is an entirely different assignment.
That’s the concern in Dallas. BC has been much more comfortable playing low-possession football than trying to trade scores, and SMU has the offensive personnel to force the Eagles out of that comfort zone.
Eagles vs. Mustangs QB Matchup
Kevin Jennings remains the engine of the SMU offense.
Jennings has completed 97 of 126 passes for 1,453 yards with 12 TD’s and 5 interceptions through four games. He’s already SMU’s career leader in passing yards and completions, and he added another school record last week with 21 consecutive completions.
That performance against Missouri State was ridiculous.
Jennings completed 33 of 39 passes for 464 yards and 3 TD’s, while also scoring once on the ground. His ability to attack every level of the field is a major problem for a Boston College defense that won’t get much margin for error Saturday.
Mason McKenzie’s game looks completely different.
McKenzie has thrown for 759 yards with 3 TD’s and 5 interceptions, but his legs have become a major part of the BC offense. Last week he ran 26 times for a career-high 138 yards and scored both Eagles TD’s.
That mobility gives Boston College a way to extend possessions even if the passing game isn’t clicking.
McKenzie doesn’t need to match Jennings throw for throw for the Eagles to move the football. If he can create with his legs, keep the chains moving and finish a few drives, BC can contribute enough points to change the complexion of this game.

Jennings has the much deeper collection of weapons and the better passing attack.
If SMU starts fast and forces BC away from a slow, run-heavy script, this could become exactly the kind of game the Eagles would rather avoid. That’s where Jennings’ ability to keep pressure on a defense becomes especially dangerous.
Boston College Eagles vs. SMU Mustangs bottom line: SMU has the firepower to control the scoreboard, while McKenzie’s legs give Boston College a way to contribute if the Mustangs turn this into a track meet.

Eagles Mustangs Free Pick: Over 55.5
Here is my Eagles Mustangs free pick: I’m taking Over 55.5. SMU can score in a hurry, and BC is walking into Dallas against a passing game that can turn one bad coverage into seven points before you finish swearing about it.
Kevin Jennings has weapons everywhere, and the Mustangs aren’t afraid to keep throwing when they’re ahead. That’s important with this total because I don’t need BC to suddenly become Oregon. I need the Eagles to chip in enough to keep SMU interested.
SMU should do most of the heavy lifting here, and I’m perfectly happy letting Boston College carry a few boxes.
Mason McKenzie gives BC a little chaos factor with his legs, and that’s not a bad thing for an Over. He can extend drives, steal yards when the pocket breaks down and create scoring chances without the Eagles having to suddenly discover a downfield passing game.
SMU has already shown it can give up points while piling them up at the other end. I see the Mustangs pushing this game into the 30’s, and if BC gets me into the low 20’s, we’re cooking. Give me Over 55.5.
