The First Responder Bowl will feature the Boston College Eagles out of the ACC and the Boise State Broncos out of the Mountain West.
These teams last met in 2005, a game in which the Eagles won, 27-21. Both teams will be looking for a bowl win to go into the offseason with something to build on.
Boston College Eagles
The Eagles were actually looking like a decent team this year, but fell into a three game losing streak to finish the regular season. They will now look to regroup and have a strong performance against a solid Boise State team.
The Eagles offense is centered around running back, AJ Dillon. He leads the team in rushing yards with 1108, and he leads the team in total touchdowns with 11. The Eagles will obviously need to plan their gameplan around Dillon, but they will also need to get others involved. The Eagles are averaging 32 points per game, and will likely need this amount of offensive production to keep up with the Broncos.
The biggest concern for the Eagles heading into this bowl game is the state of their pass defense. They allow 247.8 passing yards per game, and with a Boise State quarterback that can sling the ball it only looks like trouble for this Boston College secondary. The Eagles will need to focus on forcing some turnovers to keep the Broncos offense off the field and to give them a real chance to win this game.
Boise State Broncos
Things were looking good for the Broncos as they defeated Fresno State and Utah State in the regular season to make an appearance in the Mountain West title game. However, the rematch with Fresno State ended in a bad way as the Broncos were unable to win the Mountain West title at home, losing 16-19.
The Broncos offensive strength this season has been their passing offense. Quarterback, Brett Rypien has thrown for 3,705 yards and 30 touchdowns. Rypien was shut down for the most part in the Mountain West title game, but he should have a much better game against a soft Eagles defense. Look for running back, Alexander Mattison to also be a huge factor in this game. Mattison has run for 1,415 yards and 17 total touchdowns.
For the defense it will likely come down to one main factor. If the Broncos can shut down AJ Dillon they should be able to put away the Eagles without much problem.
