Broncos vs. Broncos Gameday
The Boise State Broncos head to Kalamazoo Saturday to face the Western Michigan Broncos in Week 4. Kickoff is set for 3:30 PM ET at Waldo Stadium, with the game airing on ESPN2.
Boise State enters 2-1 after consecutive home wins over Memphis and South Dakota. The Broncos opened with a 34-27 loss at Oregon before returning to The Blue and scoring 38 points in each of their next two games.
Now they pack the road uniforms again.
Broncos against Broncos means one thing is guaranteed Saturday: somebody gets to say “Go Broncos” afterward.
Western Michigan is also 2-1, but its path has been a little stranger. WMU lost 13-12 at Michigan on a Hail Mary as time expired, hammered Monmouth 49-14 at home and then went to Rice for a 28-21 victory.
Both teams arrive on two-game winning streaks.

This is the first meeting between Boise State and Western Michigan, so at least the Broncos-vs.-Broncos confusion is fresh.

Boise State enters as a 7.5-point road favorite with a moneyline around -273. Western Michigan is approximately +222, while the total sits at 48.5.
Boise State has scored 103 points through three games. After pushing Oregon to the final minutes in a 34-27 loss, the Broncos beat Memphis 38-20 and South Dakota 38-24.
Western Michigan has been stingier.
WMU held Michigan to 13 points before beating Monmouth 49-14 and Rice 28-21. The Broncos have scored 77 points while allowing 48, with Saturday marking their second home game of the season.

Broncos Stats
Western Michigan has produced 971 yards of offense through three games, with 500 coming on the ground. That rushing attack has become the more reliable side of the equation.
Jalen Buckley leads the backs with 207 yards and four touchdowns. Broc Lowry adds another dimension with his legs, while Aveion Chenault has been the top receiving threat with 216 yards.
Lowry has thrown for 417 yards and four touchdowns without an interception.
WMU would happily turn Saturday into a ground-game argument and see which set of Broncos gets tired first.
The defense has allowed 48 points and already showed what it can do against a ranked opponent. Western Michigan forced three turnovers at Michigan and held a 12-7 lead before losing on the final play.
That one probably still stings a little.
The Broncos responded by winning their next two, including last week’s road victory at Rice. Buckley ran for 117 yards in that game, while Lowry helped WMU control possession for nearly 33 minutes.

Boise State has also won two straight since its seven-point loss at Oregon. The Broncos have scored 38 in both victories, getting past Memphis by 18 before beating South Dakota by 14.
The running game has done plenty of the heavy lifting.
Dylan Riley has rushed for 454 yards through three games, including 206 against Memphis and 198 against South Dakota. Sire Gaines gives Boise State another option in the backfield, helping make the ground game the obvious headache for Western Michigan.
Maddux Madsen has thrown for 610 yards and six touchdowns without an interception. Rasean Jones leads Boise State with 232 receiving yards, giving Madsen a reliable target when defenses start creeping toward the line.
The Broncos have scored at least 27 points in every game.
Defensively, Boise State has allowed 78 points, including 24 in each of its last two wins. The Broncos have produced five sacks and three interceptions, but this group hasn’t been nearly as dominant as the running game.
That puts a little more pressure on the offense to keep controlling Saturdays.
BST vs. WMU QB Matchup
Broc Lowry has completed 44 of 61 passes for 417 yards, four touchdowns and no interceptions. He’s also a legitimate part of Western Michigan’s running game, which makes defending the Broncos a little less straightforward than simply tracking Buckley.
Lowry doesn’t need to turn this into a passing contest.
Western Michigan is at its best when he can use both parts of his game and keep the offense on schedule. Against Rice, WMU ran 42 times for 217 yards while Lowry attempted only 19 passes, which is probably pretty close to the recipe Lance Taylor would order again.
Maddux Madsen has been more productive through the air.
The Boise State starter has thrown for 610 yards and six touchdowns without giving away an interception. He’s been supported by a rushing attack that has exploded over the last two games, allowing Madsen to work without having to throw the Broncos out of trouble.

Madsen threw for 208 yards against South Dakota while Riley ran for 198. A week earlier, Riley went for 206 against Memphis while Madsen added 221 through the air.
That’s a fairly comfortable way to play quarterback.
Lowry brings more rushing ability himself, while Madsen gets the benefit of Boise State’s deeper ground attack.
Whichever quarterback can stay out of obvious passing situations should have the easier afternoon.
Boise State Broncos vs. Western Michigan Broncos bottom line: Boise State brings the more explosive rushing attack into Kalamazoo, but Western Michigan has enough defense, quarterback mobility and home-field comfort to make this first-ever battle of the Broncos considerably more awkward than the visitors would prefer.

Here is my Broncos Broncos free pick: I’m taking Under 48.5. Boise State has scored 38 in consecutive games, but Western Michigan has already shown it can turn a matchup with a quality opponent into something considerably less entertaining.
WMU held Michigan to 13 points in Ann Arbor and just went to Rice and won 28-21. The Broncos should be perfectly comfortable leaning on Broc Lowry and Jalen Buckley, running the football and making Boise State work through longer possessions.
If Western Michigan gets its preferred game script, this could become a very long afternoon for over bettors.
Boise State brings plenty of offense, especially with Dylan Riley running the ball, but this is also its second road game. The first ended 34-27 at Oregon, and I’m not expecting Western Michigan to provide nearly as many possessions.
