I m really looking forward to this game. It might not have the weight of playoff implications but it should be lots of fun.
Both of these teams have new coaches so we can’t be totally sure what we are going to see in this one either. That adds to the intrigue, right?
Both of these teams are expected to compete in their respective conferences so the quality of the action should be pretty good.
Boise State Broncos
Boise State hums along as one of the elite programs outside the Power 5. They seem to always find the right coach too, this time bringing home Andy Avalos, a former player and coordinator in the program.
Avalos walks into a good situation with 8 starters returning on both sides of the ball. Most importantly, he has a QB in Hank Bachmeier that has proven he can get the job done.
Defense is Avalos’ specialty so he should be able to get more out of a the returning group which was only middle of the pack in the Mountain West last season. DE Shane Irwin is a good pass-rusher.
Boise State is always a dangerous underdog. If it is business as usual under the new coach they are a definite threat in this one.
UCF Knights
The Knights are also breaking in a new coach. I don’t think they were sad to see Josh Heupel move on and there is excitement with Gus Malzahn coming to town.
UCF loves to push the envelope on offense and Dillon Gabriel was one of the most productive quarterbacks in the nation a year ago. They were second in the nation in total offense.
Malzahn loves to run the ball and the Knights can do that too. I think he is going to be the kind of guy that goes with whatever works and will fit in just fine. He will be aggressive and that is in keeping with the best recent uCF teams.
Illinois gave up 34ppg a year ago and that was with avoiding some of the better offensive teams in the conference. They have a bunch of returning talent on that side too it is just not clear if that is a good or bad thing.
The Knights play fast and sometimes that affects their defensive numbers but they were also no very good on that side of the ball last season. They can win shootouts but it would be good if they didn’t always have to.

Free Week 1 NCAA Football Pick
I like UCF at home to get off to a good start. Both programs should have success this season but only one can win.
4* Free Week 1 NCAA Betting Pick: UCF -5.5
They might look a little different on offense but I think the Knights should have no trouble moving the ball against Boise State. Look for UCF to get on them early and build a nice working margin. In the second half this game is probably about even.
