Whenever I see the Baylor and West Virginia matchup, football or basketball, I instantly think about that high-scoring clash back in 2012. The Mountaineers picked up a 70-63 win that day behind the arm of WVU great Geno Smith. With Geno back in the limelight in Seattle, I’ll break this one down in tribute to him and the resiliency he’s displayed in his career.
The Baylor Bears will travel Morgantown and take on the West Virginia Mountaineers this Thursday on FS1. West Virginia opens as the five-point favorites, with the total opening at 54.5
Baylor Bears
Blake Shapen has been serviceable this season, providing a few bright moments. The sophomore quarterback performed on the road versus Iowa State, but he turned the ball over twice in the loss to Oklahoma State. He’ll grow through the inconsistencies, but how well he bodes in Morgantown remains to be seen.
Shapen has thrown for 1,118 passing yards with nine touchdowns to three interceptions through five starts.
Richard Reese took over the lead role after a big game versus Texas State. The true freshman picked up 156 yards and scored three times in the win. Reese followed that performance up with two solid outings in Big 12 play and he leads Baylor in rushing with 400 yards.
Baylor has been known for their playmaking wideouts, but the cupboard is bare this season. Monaray Baldwin has provided some big play ability, and he leads the team with 261 receiving yards. Senior tight end Ben Sim leads the team with 20 receptions.
West Virginia Mountaineers
J.T. Daniels may have finally found a home here in the college game. After stints with USC and UGA, the junior quarterback has settled in as WVU’s guy. Daniels performed well versus Tech on the road, and hasn’t turned the ball over in three games.
Daniels has thrown for 1,209 passing yards with eight touchdowns to two interceptions on the season.
CJ Donaldson’s explosiveness will be missed for this one, as the freshman back is set to miss this bout Thursday. Donaldson leads WVU with 389 rushing yards, while Tony Mathis Jr. is second on the team with 296 yards on 70 touches.
Bryce Ford-Wheaton and Sam James have given Daniels’ an experienced pair of wideouts to target. Ford-Wheaton caught a career-high 11 against KU, and gained 93 yards versus Texas. He leads the team in receptions (35), receiving yards (412), and touchdowns (4). James has 20 catches for 305 yards
