On Thursday, December 31st the Ball State Cardinals will be traveling to Tuscon to take on the #22 ranked San Jose State Spartans in the Arizona Bowl. The Spartans are coming off a victory in the Mountain West Championship where they took down Boise to continue their quest for a perfect season, while the Cardinals upset Buffalo in the MAC Championship as 15-point underdogs to move to 6-1 this year.
Ball State Cardinals
Ball State will look to play spoiler to another team’s perfect season after beating the undefeated Buffalo Bills in the MAC Championship. It marked the first time in program history that the Cardinals had won the MAC championship game and this was their best finish record-wise since 2008 when they went 12-2.
Senior QB Drew Plitt is the leader of the Cardinal’s offense. Plitt has passed for 1,937 yards, 16 touchdowns, and six interceptions while being sacked 24 times. The leading rusher for Ball State is Caleb Huntley with 437 yards and six touchdowns. Unfortunately for the Cardinals, Huntley will be sitting out of this game to prepare for the NFL draft. Justin Hall was Plitt’s main target this season and hauled in 665 yards and four touchdown receptions.
Offensively, the Cardinals are averaging 34.3 points per game which is good for 26th in the FBS. They are averaging 278.1 passing yards per game and 177 yards on the ground.
On defense, Ball State surrenders 27.6 points per game which is ranked 56th out of 127 teams in the FBS. Linebacker Brandon Martin is the leader in tackles with 85 and linebacker Anthony Ekpe is the leader in quarterback sacks with 5.0.
San Jose State Spartans
The Spartans are attempting to complete the first perfect season in school history with a bowl victory over the Cardinals. San Jose State finished its regular season with a perfect 7-0 record and was 6-0 in Mountain West Conference. Senior transfer Nick Starkel has taken this team from the basement to the Mountain West to the top in less than a year and spending three years at Arkansas facing SEC competition.
Nick Starkel was once a five-star product coming out of high school, but could never get it to click with the Razorbacks. But it looks like he has put it together with the Spartans. He has passed for 1,906 yards to go along with 16 touchdowns and four interceptions. Starkel was second among quarterbacks in the Mountain West in touchdown passes and fourth in passing yards. The most impressive thing is that Starkel has been sacked only five times this season.
The leading rusher for the Spartans is Tyler Nevens with 478 yards and five touchdowns, while the leading receiver is Bailey Gaither with 725 yards and four touchdown receptions. The San Jose State offense is putting up 30.9 points per game which is 46th in the country.
Defensively, the Spartans are allowing opponents to score just 17.9 points per game. They have the 13th best scoring defense in the country and they have only surrendered more than 20 points twice this season.
