Here’s why I’m backing the bet below in my Tigers Volunteers free pick & gambling prediction for this matchup.
Tigers vs. Volunteers Gameday
Auburn heads to Knoxville for a Week 5 SEC matchup with No. 17 Tennessee at Neyland Stadium. Alex Golesh’s Tigers are 3-1 and 1-1 in conference play, while Josh Heupel’s Volunteers enter at 3-1 and 2-1.
Kickoff is set for 3:30 PM ET on ESPN.
Auburn bounced back from its loss to Florida by beating Vanderbilt at home. Tennessee is trying to respond after taking No. 1 Texas to the final play last Saturday.
Auburn gets its first road game at Neyland, because apparently easing into things was considered unnecessary.
There’s another layer for Golesh, who returns to Knoxville after previously serving as Heupel’s offensive coordinator. Auburn hasn’t played at Neyland since 2013, so the Tigers are getting reacquainted with the place at full volume.

Auburn Tigers vs. Tennessee Volunteers Odds & Last 5
The opening odds make Tennessee the home favorite. The Volunteers are -285 on the moneyline, Auburn is +231, and Tennessee is laying 7 points.
The opening total is 54.5.
Auburn beat Vanderbilt 21-15 last week after taking a 14-3 advantage into halftime. The Tigers protected that lead despite Vanderbilt controlling much of the second half.
Tennessee suffered its first loss with a 20-17 defeat to Texas.
The Volunteers recovered an onside kick after pulling within three late and got one final shot at the end zone before the Longhorns escaped Neyland Stadium.
Auburn has controlled the recent series.
The Tigers won 30-17 in the most recent meeting in 2020 and have taken seven of the last eight. Auburn also won the last three meetings in Knoxville.

Volunteers Stats
Tennessee’s defense gave the nation’s top-ranked team all it could handle last week.
The Volunteers held Texas to 262 total yards and only 61 on the ground. They piled up 10 tackles for loss and six sacks while limiting the Longhorns to 3 of 12 on third down.
That pressure has become Tennessee’s defensive identity.
The Vols lead the country with 19 sacks through four games. Tyree Weathersby had 2.5 against Texas, while Xavier Gilliam repeatedly joined him in collapsing the pocket.
The offense had a much more difficult afternoon.
Tennessee produced 221 total yards and converted only 4 of 16 third downs. Mike Matthews supplied the biggest receiving play with a 30-yard TD late in the fourth quarter.
The offensive line now carries an additional concern.
Wendell Moe Jr. is out after being injured against Texas, while Sham Umarov is questionable. That’s less than ideal timing with Auburn bringing its own ability to create pressure.
Tigers Stats
Auburn didn’t produce an offensive masterpiece against Vanderbilt, but the Tigers found enough ways to win.
Special teams supplied the biggest swing when Omar Mabson II blocked a punt and Cade Carlson returned it for a TD. Auburn also blocked a kick, giving the Tigers two major special-teams plays without asking the offense to do much of anything.
The defense handled the rest.
Vanderbilt put together a pair of long second-half drives, but Auburn surrendered only one TD. When the Commodores threatened late, the Tigers kept them out of the end zone and then finished the game with the football.
Jeremiah Cobb led Auburn with 58 rushing yards on eight carries.
Byrum Brown added a rushing TD and delivered a 20-yard third-down completion to Keshaun Singleton on Auburn’s final possession. That conversion allowed the Tigers to drain the remaining clock.
Auburn won ugly last week, and there are no style points hiding anywhere on the SEC standings page.
Now the Tigers take that offense into an entirely different environment.
Tai Buster and Hunter Herring are out, but Auburn otherwise enters the matchup with a relatively clean availability report. Communication and protection become much bigger issues against Tennessee’s front and a Neyland crowd that isn’t known for using its indoor voice.
Tigers vs. Volunteers QB Matchup
Faizon Brandon remains Tennessee’s starter after winning the job as a true freshman.
Brandon has thrown for 697 yards with 7 TD’s and no interceptions through four games. Against Texas, he finished 17-of-29 for 145 yards and a TD without turning the football over.
Byrum Brown brings considerably more experience to Auburn.
The senior is making his fifth start for the Tigers after following Golesh from South Florida. His mobility gives Auburn another way to survive when protection breaks down and the pocket starts getting crowded.
CP Is More Than Just Sports Picks!
“ Anybody can post a prediction. CappersPicks backs up its sports picks with opinionated matchup analysis, experienced handicappers & documented betting performance. Pad that bankroll one day at a time! ”
Brandon’s ball security has been one of Tennessee’s biggest advantages.
The freshman hasn’t needed to chase reckless throws to keep the offense moving. With the Vols capable of winning field position on defense, another patient afternoon would suit Tennessee just fine.
Brown faces the more uncomfortable assignment.
Tennessee has consistently reached opposing QB’s, and the combination of that front with Neyland crowd noise can turn routine third downs into a communication exercise nobody requested. Brown can rescue plays with his legs, but Auburn would much rather keep him out of rescue mode altogether.
Auburn Tigers vs. Tennessee Volunteers bottom line: both QB’s can create plays, but the defensive fronts have enough leverage to make long, clean scoring drives difficult to manufacture.

Tigers Volunteers Free Pick: Under 54.5
Here is my Tigers Volunteers free pick: I’m taking Under 54.5. Tennessee’s defensive front is creating problems on nearly every passing down, and Auburn gets its first true dose of hostile-road SEC football at Neyland. That’s not where I’m expecting offensive efficiency to suddenly become everybody’s favorite hobby.
The matchup starts with Tennessee’s pressure. Brown can escape and create with his legs, but the Vols don’t need to blitz themselves silly to bother him. If Auburn keeps landing in third-and-long, that crowd gets louder and my Under ticket gets considerably prettier.
Neyland plus the nation’s most productive pass rush is a fairly rude welcome for Auburn’s first road game.
Tennessee doesn’t need Brandon throwing the football all over the yard either. The freshman has protected possessions, and with the Vols’ defense capable of controlling field position, Heupel can afford to be patient instead of turning this into a Saturday afternoon fireworks audition.
My college football betting system likes the game state here. Let the defenses create long fields, make both QB’s earn drives and force somebody to string together 10 plays instead of living on explosives. I’ll happily root for punts with the rest of the degenerates. Give me Auburn-Tennessee Under 54.5.
